MacOS15 / Sequoia - problems with Microsoft files

Hi,

I updated to Sequoia and everything seemed fine.

Now, neither my MacBook Pro (M3) nor my Apple Mini (M2) recognises Microsoft files any longer (Word. PowerPoint, Excel....).

Finder tries to open MS Word files with Preview. When I tell Finder to open the file with MS Word I get the following error message: "Apple could not verify "xxxxxxxxx.docx" is free of malware that may harm your Mac or compromise your privacy". Other file types work perfectly well as before.

Everything works well on my iOS 18 devices.

Anyone else having this problem. Any ideas?

Cheers

SWE

The workaround that worked for me, go to the file with *.docx extension and "right click" to select "Get Info".

From the "Get Info" screen, go to where it says "Open With:", make sure you select "Microsoft Word" and then select "Change All...". This will associate all "*.docx" files back to "Microsoft Word", and no more issues when clicking from the Finder window.

Similarly, do the same for *.xlsx extensions and Microsoft Excel.

Hope this helps everyone. Apple and MS still need to provide an update that fixes this by default on the next update.

Same thing happened to me when I updated to Sequoia 15.0 on September 19. I couldn't get into any of my Word documents. But when I tried again on September 21, behold! I could use Word again. The only remaining difference is when someone emails me a Word document, even when I email one to myself from another computer, I can't make edits on the doc. I have to make a "duplicate" first and then can work on the doc that was sent to me.

I am assuming when Apple found out about this problem they fixed it. How about you, are your Microsoft apps working again?

Thank you to VikingOSX.

I followed the suggestion of booting into safe mode then going into Get Info to get it to open a .docx file. Then rebooted the MBP i9 and now it seems to allow me to open the file from Finder or within Open in the Word app.

I don’t know if it is coincidence or actually fixed it, but Word does seem to be able to open the docx.

However the files do not have a little image on the thumbnail icon.

At least I’m another step forward.

I only have Word 16.89. I am not sure how to move to 16.89.1

I have an Intel MB Pro and just installed Sequoia. MS Excel now hangs up every time I open it directly -- specifically it cannot build the "recent files" opening page, and must be manually force-quit. But Excel opens and runs Ok if I double-click any pre-existing spreadsheet from the Finder. It looks like Excel is unable to access part of Sequoia's file code.

9/30/24, I cannot save Office .doc(x) or .ppt(x) files once created on a MacAir running Sequoia 15. .xls files seem to have converted and work ok.

Last week, I had to cut and paste a .doc document to a Pages file in order to capture and distribute the work, b/c it could not be saved or exported.

I have been unable to print .ppt(x) files or export to 2 slides/pg .pdf.

same issues and was unable to export .doc files to .pdf. ElCaptain's workaround appears to have fixed my issues.

It's a scandal that this happens so often with an update and I believe MS is doing this on purpose. Anyway, you can go to a word-file, go to info and change the extension .docx into .doc and then you can open it. The problem does not appear when you try to open recent files, only when you make use of finder to access the document.

My MacBook Air M1 updated to Sequoia 15.0.1, and at first, I believed the problem would be resolved. However, the error persists. The previous procedure I mentioned, repairing via macOS recovery, would temporarily fix the issue, allowing Word to save without errors, but after a few saves, the error would return.

Unfortunately, Apple has not addressed this open topic, and the issue continues.

To fix this, I'm saving all my documents on OneDrive and only at the end save them as .pdf on my server.

This situation is becoming extremely exhausting.

And I read some people saying the problem is from Microsoft and a disagree. The problem came with the Sequoia 15.0 and persist...
