MacOS15 / Sequoia - problems with Microsoft files

Hi,

I updated to Sequoia and everything seemed fine.

Now, neither my MacBook Pro (M3) nor my Apple Mini (M2) recognises Microsoft files any longer (Word. PowerPoint, Excel....).

Finder tries to open MS Word files with Preview. When I tell Finder to open the file with MS Word I get the following error message: "Apple could not verify "xxxxxxxxx.docx" is free of malware that may harm your Mac or compromise your privacy". Other file types work perfectly well as before.

Everything works well on my iOS 18 devices.

Anyone else having this problem. Any ideas?

Cheers

SWE

The workaround that worked for me, go to the file with *.docx extension and "right click" to select "Get Info".

From the "Get Info" screen, go to where it says "Open With:", make sure you select "Microsoft Word" and then select "Change All...". This will associate all "*.docx" files back to "Microsoft Word", and no more issues when clicking from the Finder window.

Similarly, do the same for *.xlsx extensions and Microsoft Excel.

Hope this helps everyone. Apple and MS still need to provide an update that fixes this by default on the next update.

Same issue with me (from France).

After updating to Sequoia:

  • documents with extension .docx and .xlsx were not recognized (.pptx, and previous office extensions like .doc with the "x" were well recognized).
  • After damaging a word file because it was opening with iBooks Author by default (I didn't paid attention at that time) then I forced opening of docx and xlsx documents by going to the "information" of one of each type of file and then asked to use these apps for all.
  • Since then I have been able to open docx and xlsx files, but stil the icon is is blank in the finder and the "Preview" mode is not working for these files.
  • Pages cannot open the docx files (Numbers cannot for the xlsx files)
  • When I open Word, the recent and the file browsing well recognizes the docx files and displays the icons. Same in DropBox, Open Office, LibreOffice or other Apps, but still not in Finder.
  • When I create a new docx documents, the icon is also not displaying in the Finder and the Preview doesn't work either.

I use the latest versions of Sequoia and of Office business/Family 365 on a MacBook Pro 16" 2023 M2 Max.

(I reinstalled both Sequoia and Office without any improvement)

...

  • TActually, they disappeared on my MacBookPro M1 but they did not disappear on my iMac (Intel processor) although both are now on MacOS 15.0.
  • I went to the Microsoft 365 subscription page using my MacBook Pro, downloaded and installed the apps.
  • The problem is solved

I've got the same type of issue. In my case the word file extension is connected to Canva. If I try to reassign it to Word it says ok and tries to open the file in word but it ends up with the damaged file message. That's even for a file I created in word 30 seconds ago. The same goes for Microsoft Excel files. Same type of message and they're also connected to Canva.

Microsoft Powerpoint made it through for some odd reason.

Running: MacBook Pro M1

MacOS: Sequoia 15.0 Swedish

I sort of figured it out but it seems some what backwards to me. To see the icon for the file that you saved it as you have to use "Show View Options" and uncheck "Show icon preview" and the icon for the app will appear for the file. I would have thought that checking it would reveal the icon for the file.
