Touch screen not working on my iPhone after iOS 18 update

I recently updated my iPhone 14 Pro Max to iOS 18, just a few hours after its release (10:30 pm, September 17). The software update seemed to be working fine overnight as I customized various settings. However, the next morning (September 18, approximately 9:02 am), my screen froze, and the touch functionality stopped working. Interestingly, all other features remained functional, including receiving calls, DMs, notifications, Find My alerts from my Apple watch.. etc. The volume buttons worked as usual, but I couldn't unlock my device or get the touch screen to respond.

I attempted to update as well as update&restore my iPhone through iTunes, even sacrificing my data, but still had no luck. Please help me resolve this issue; it's extremely frustrating and disappointing

I finally got fed up with mine and did the same as you. Went to an apple store, told them it was unresponsive after I'd hit the power/lock button. They restored my phone, still didn't work. Factory reset my phone, still didn't work (this was done on their computer too). They said they could replace the screen. It just doesn't seem like a hardware issue, since I was having problems since I upgraded to iOS 18. I went ahead and let them (thankfully I have AppleCare through Verizon so it was free) and surprisingly, it fixed the issue. I can now press the power button and it actually works. No more issues with the touch screen. So, for what it's worth, it might fix your issue. However, $370 is really steep to fix a touch screen.

I’m experiencing a similar issue with my iPhone 14 Pro Max after updating to iOS 18. On September 20th at around 11 PM Sri Lanka time, my screen became unresponsive. I updated on the 19th and didn’t customize anything afterward. Everything else is working fine—calls, notifications, buttons—but the touch screen won’t respond. I’ve tried force restarting and re-updating through iTunes, but no luck. It’s frustrating since my phone was perfect before the update. Now I can not event access my email. Have you found any solutions yet?

I'd like to add to my previous post. I forgot to mention that I visited an Apple-authorized store near me (iVenus), where I was informed, 'Sir, this is an electronic device, and anything can happen; there's nothing we can do because it's an electronic device.' The only thought revolving around my head was that I spent approximately ₹1.2 lakh (USD 1,400 approx) and this is the kind of service we receive after the warranty period expires.

My phone was functioning at its peak, with 93% battery health, and I take meticulous care of my device, which has zero physical damage and no water exposure. Yet, this is the kind of service we get. Apple claims to support iPhones for at least five years (software-wise), but if the software itself damages the phone, what's the point of purchasing the most premium phone Apple offers?

Also, Mr. Axel Foley, thank you so much for the tip, but trust me, I have literally tried every possible way - all the solutions Apple suggests to get my phone working without any technician needing to open and analyze it - still no luck. As it was working fine before the update, it's clear the OS was responsible for this malfunction/bug/glitch.

Im also having major problems following the ISO18 update. I have no cell service and when I look at the Cellular diagnostics on my iPhone, there is an "issue with the cellular connection". Apple is now indicating it is problem with my hardware and I need to book an appointment to get it fixed. This is complete BS because I had no problems with hardware or anything prior to this specific software update. I am now seeing this same problem with most people who have done the iso18 software update. I don't even have the option to look at my carrier network to see if there are any carrier updates and this was one of the "Apple Tech" solutions among other things "if I had that option even available on my phone anymore". I am so upset because Apple has release what is the worst software update. I suspect they will try to have me by a new phone as I have an iPhone 12.

Same thing happened to my 12 pro max, absolute pristine condition, no problems with it at all until the update. Factory reset it and restored the whole thing and still hasn’t fixed it.

only thing I can think that’s happened is the update isn’t compatible with the older models and they aren’t sure how to fix it. Something similar has happened before and they released an update straight after for the older models to fix the issue but it hasn’t worked this time

I have a 16 pro and am having issues intermittently. For instance when my phone is on lock and I get a message I can’t always touch the message to open up my phone to open straight to the notification. It’s completely unresponsive. I have to swipe up to open and go find the message. There are other times randomly where the screen goes unresponsive and I have to close down whatever application I am in and start over. After getting my new 16 and immediately getting iOS 18 there seems to be many quirky irritating bugs. I am not sure if it’s my new phone or the iOS?!

The same issue is happening with my iPhone 12. I tried several forced restarts, but they didn’t work. Next, I attempted an update via iTunes with the phone in recovery mode, but still no luck. I even resorted to restoring the phone to its factory settings, losing all my data in the process, yet the touchscreen remains unresponsive.

I went to Apple, and they suggested replacing the screen for €300—almost the price of the phone itself.

This morning, I left the phone at a trusted repair shop so they can inspect the issue. Now, I’m waiting for their feedback.

Strangely, just five hours earlier, I told my wife, "I’ve been using this phone for three years now, and I don’t plan on replacing it anytime soon."

iOS 18.1.1

I have this, or a very similar problem, too. When my phone is switched on, the touch display becomes unresponsive. I am being asked to input my password through the keyboard, but, of course, the touch screen is locked. I've tried the hard reset route shown here, and on a few videos, but after pressing the volume up and down buttons on the left side, pressing the right-hand button just activates Siri. Doh!

I've tried resetting my iPhone via my MacBook and the Music app, but it says my iPhone is locked.

Other than letting my iPhone fully discharge and reset itself, I cannot think of a fix to this frustrating problem.

Any other ideas?

I don’t have any issue on IOS 18 or 18.1 but after I update it to iOS 18.1.1, the touch screen frozen while charging, nothing can be activated including entering the passcode. Once I pull off the charging cable, it works fine. I realize my phone has lagging issue while typing too. I’m using iPhone 15 pro max.

Btw, I have same issue with my iPad with iOS 18.1.1

Kindly help ….

Sounds like something to do with your Accesibility settings, like Assistive Touch or something like that? I have iPhone 11, and reading this forum makes me realize that the issues I'm having may have started with the update as well... The lower half of my screen, where the KEYBOARD is, is squirrely. I've erased it and restored to factory because hello, halo, bonjour... I am STUCK in the setup of the device because I cannot type some of the letters needed to actually LOG IN with my Apple ID and password that I have not forgotten!

Long story.... frustrating, but I have to double tap with 3 fingers to get the screen zoomed up large so I can use 2 fingers to drag my way to the bottom of the screen and TRY to answer phone calls to get a Verification code to log into iCloud for Windows, which holds my only access to passwords...... GRR I'm stuck waiting for a friend to come by so i might use their device to log into mine *growlz*.... 3 taps gradually got me on wifi and to the login screen.
