iPhone keyboard lagging after iOS 18 Update

Hello guys, I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max and I've been suffering for the famous keyboard lag since I've updated to iOS 17 one year ago. In my case the problem starts to occur when I enable 2 languages on my keyboard (for me, Italian and English). I hoped that with the iOS 18 update and the introduction of the bilingual keyboard this bug would finally be fixed but sadly, that was not the case. I've tried every possible troubleshooting known for this issue, yesterday I've even reset my iPhone, but again, without success. Is someone experiencing the same issue even in iOS 18? And have you managed to fix this? Thank you.

Hello guys, I'm gonna share with you a little tip that might help you with this issue. If you go into Settings -> General -> Dictionary you will see the list of dictionaries enabled on your iPhone, in my case, 5 dictionaries were selected: Italian/English, 2 different English dictionaries, an Italian one and Apple Dictionary. I tried disabling the Italian/English one and one of the 2 English ones and the lag seems better on my device (not 100% gone but much better than before). I don't know if this will work also on your devices but you might give it a try, it doesn't seem to affect the keyboard prediction accuracy. I'll attach a screenshot of the settings page I'm talking about.

This is exactly what fixed it for me. I had tried resetting the keyboard dictionary, which didnt work. But turning off “predictive text”, “auto-correction”, and “show math results” completely removed the keyboard lag I have been experiencing since updating. If youre experiencing this, i suggest turning these features off if you can deal with auto correct not being on.

Unfortunately, i don't think it will help. I wrote a few weeks ago that for me it started with iOS 17 on my olf iPhone 11 Pro.

I got that phone new when it launched, and it still has 91% battery health. The keyboard lag was so bad that it made me buy 15 pro Max, but the problem is still here.

The only thing that helped me was to delete one of the languages on the keyboard, so now i only use my main language. Also try to delete the dictionaries that you don't use. It will be annoying to type in another language (apart from your main one), but i managed to get rid of the lag.

So don't make to many expectations regarding the battery change🙁

i've tried turning off auto correct, predictive text, slide to type as many other people have suggested and from my experience, that is NOT a fix. For my 16 pro max, the issue seems to be coming from haptics. If i turn off keyboard haptics, any keyboard lag that i've had in ANY browser disappears. When haptics are on, that slight input lag accompanied by keyboard sound delays appear again. Putting the phone in silent mode fixes it with haptics on for some reason too.

For me with an iPhone 12, since 18.2 the keyboard is gotta be 95% better,

but I just wanted to share what my current settings are, so that maybe other people can maybe replicate what I’m experiencing?

i got two dictionaries downloaded, the Apple dictionary and the new Oxford English

Auto capitalization, auto correction, predictive text, check spelling, smart grammar punctuation, character preview and the “.” Shortcut enabled. Everything else in that list Is disabled.

auto dictation is on below that. And emoji stickers enabled.

and so far I will say compared to how things felt before, it’s significantly less lagy. The lag before like was 3-5 letters behind for me. Right now it feels like maybe 1-2 at the most.

after trying every suggested fix - I finally managed to stop the keyboard lag in my notes apps

it's the new "math results"!!!!!!

default on all individual devices is to "suggest results" - switching this to "off" has made all the difference in the world = notes typing lag is completely GONE

iOS location is the 'three dots in a circle' drop down

Mac OS location in 'format' menu

so much relief as I've wasted hours logging in and out of iCloud services, deleting and re-installing the app.

hoping this helps others

Its really bizarre this many people are having rhis problem and apple has done nothing about it for years.

It doesn’t matter what app I’m using or how many times I have disabled haptic feedback, deleted the keyboard, shut off predictive text etc. Nothing works.

When you start typing it’s like starting a countdown. The more characters you type the worst it gets. For example right now it’s starting to slow down to the point that is almost unusable.

The only way I fix it is by copying the text, force quitting the app and then re-opening it. That restarts the “countdown” and gets me a few more answers until I repeat the process.

The only thing that I have not tried is getting a new battery. I know that sounds ridiculous but I have tried everything else and when I look up the condition of my battery it IS degraded……

I have ordered a new battery and I’m waiting for it to get here. In the meantime if you are reading this, open up your settings and click on the battery health. If your battery is degraded significantly and your keyboard is lagging can you let me know? Thanks!

Everyone you need to do a clean install after a big update.!I did everything and finally I remember when I went from 16 to 17 it’s was a similar issue apple isn’t doong anything because Ionce you do a clean install there is zero issue. I did it to my whole family’s devices and zero issue keyboard is so fast I can’t even type fast enough to have any lag. Your welcome everyone do a clean install and boom restore from iCloud back and zero issue I have a brand new iPhone again thank the lord and I didn’t have to download Microsoft keyboard!!! Apple you have restored my faith and do not download temu on your phone that slows the phone down as well. Merry Christmas
