Yahoo mail not downloading in background on iOS 18

In IOS 18, my new yahoo mails don’t download until I open the apple mail app. The badge will say I have a number of new emails, but they don’t start downloading until I access the inbox. This worked until the upgrade and all I’m still set to Fetch every 15 minutes (yahoo doesn’t allow push) like before.

I escalated the issue and spoke with a higher level technical support representative today (12/15), and she acknowledged that there’s an issue with Yahoo mail in the Mail app with iOS 18.2.

The workaround is to use the Yahoo mail app until it gets fixed. There’s no eta on the resolution, but she said that it’s a high priority to fix it because it affects so many people.

I have been following this thread for awhile as I too suffer from this issue. I updated to iOS 18.3 and after a few days I have noticed the following.

  • If the phone is not plugged in and the mail app is closed and not running in the background, I will only get emails/notifications after I open the app.
  • If the phone is plugged in, the mail app can be open, closed, or running in background and it works as expected.
  • If the phone is not plugged in and the mail app is running the background I get notifications and the expected behavior of the fetch system. But if I force close the app, it stops.

Anyone else notice this behavior on iOS 18.3?

Email - Fetch vs. Push Differences

Email clients, such as the Mail app on iOS devices, use either Fetch or Push to retrieve new emails from email servers. The primary difference between these two methods lies in the initiation and timing of email retrieval.

Fetch

  • Initiated by the client (email app): The email app periodically connects to the email server to check for new emails, downloading them when available.
  • Timed-based: Fetch intervals can be set, such as every 15 minutes, 1 hour, or daily, depending on the email client’s settings.
  • Slower response time: Fetching emails can take longer since the client needs to actively connect to the server and request new emails.

Push

  • Initiated by the server: The email server proactively pushes new emails to the client (email app) as they arrive, without the client needing to actively request them.
  • Real-time notification: Push allows for immediate notification of new emails, as the server sends updates directly to the client.
  • Faster response time: Push eliminates the need for the client to periodically check the server, reducing the time it takes to receive new emails.

In summary, Fetch is a client-initiated, timed-based approach, while Push is a server-initiated, real-time notification method. The choice between Fetch and Push depends on individual preferences and email usage habits. Some users may prefer the immediate notifications of Push, while others may prefer the more controlled, batched approach of Fetch.

Indeed, but this is general information. That doea not answer the fact that the mail app does not fetch email in ios18 as it did in previous versions. I have the same issue and all settings are just like before updating to ios18. The issue lies with the maill app not something else. I have several other email accounts also set to fetch and they work properly. The issue is only with yahoo accounts…

Same issue here. Used to work fine before IOS18 upgrade. Other email accounts (Gmail, outlook, iCloud) working fine. I tried to delete and add back the account, change settings from Fetch to Manual and vice versa, to no avail.

I also tried deleting the account and adding it "manually" (i.e. without adding it as a Yahoo account, but rather specifying IMAP server settings, but the result is the same...

Having the same issue on my iPhone 15 Pro Max and my iPad. Ever since the iOS and iPadOS 18 updates my Yahoo! mails no longer download in the background. I have the same settings as I had with the previous iOS version, but I can only get my emails if I open the mail app. All other accounts work fine, but Yahoo! does not. When will this be addressed?

I tried, but it's still not working for me, irrespective of being connected to WiFi or being in charge mode. Only way to get the email is via the Yahoo Mail app. Last update in Apple mail is like 18 hours ago. When Mail is open, it goes into a frantic loop of "checking mail" "updated" "checking mail" "updated", without actually being able to download anything.

Again, this is just for my Yahoo account, all others work fine.

I looks like Apple might have changed the inner workings of Mail on the mobile devices. You don't have your email download in the background now but only after you initiate the procedure by opening Mail and having the software query the servers. I believe that they did this to conserve the battery to last longer. If anyone has any information to the contrary I would appreciate it if you would update this thread.

I contacted Apple Support about this problem today and they had never heard of the problem before. A senior advisor wanted me to reset my iPhone and iPhone and set them up as new which I refused to do. I already deleted and re-added the mail account which didn't help.

Like everyone else here, my Yahoo Mail only downloads in the background when the phone is charging. It's basically behaving like I have "Automatic" fetch set, but I have "15 Minutes".

Has anyone tried out 18.2RC to see if Mail downloads in the background with that?

I had a follow up call from Apple Support and the said engineering wanted to collect Mail logging. We reproduced the problem, but the mail collection failed on my phone with an error. The support person said they got it even though my phone didn't upload anything and then the call got disconnected and they didn't call back.

I transferred the diagnostic logs over to my Mac and looked at them I can see in the console that the mail app is running periodically to check for new mail, but doesn't actually find anything to download. I've tried submitting Feedback assistant reports, but they are ignored by Apple.

Same issue with my IPhone, Yahoo email says I have numerous emails, I open it, nothing there until it downloads the emails. I also use two other Gmail accounts. They work as they did prior to 18 update. After 18, Yahoo emails haven’t downloaded as they used to, plus on Yahoo, I have a VIP set on one of my contacts, which used to notify me when they sent an email. Now it doesn’t. It’s definitely a Yahoo issue beens Gmail accounts are working as they did prior to IOS 18 updates.

This is still broken in iOS 18.2. Mail still won’t download unless plugged in. Can’t understand how this still isn’t fixed yet, considering how easy it is to reproduce.

I’m still dealing with Apple support. They’ve been grabbing logs for a few weeks now. I actually looked at one and I can see it connecting to Yahoo, but saying there’s no mail to download.
