Unlocking iPad without ID

Hi, my dad passed away in 2019. He had an iPad Mini. We tried unlocking it with the Apple ID/password we found in one of his docs, but it did not work. I tried resetting it, but it still requires the Apple ID. We contacted a local Apple dealer and they said it's not possible without the account ID. My mom keeps asking me to do something about it... It's just been lying at home unused, so I thought I'll come here and ask for help. Thanks!

For information about how to request access to a deceased family member's Apple account data, and possibly their equipment, read this support article --> How to request access to a deceased family member's Apple account - Apple Support

An alternative: Apple can completely reset a device if a person can provide sufficient evidence of valid ownership. Check the requirements and steps at: Activation Lock support request - https://al-support.apple.com/#/additional-support Apple says, "Proof of ownership documentation is required," but does not detail what currently constitutes proof other than it “must include the product serial number, IMEI or MEID.” Apple may typically require the original receipt* issued by Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller. If Apple resets the device this will give you access to the device but won't restore access to the account used to lock it. There is nothing that can be done to expedite an Activation Lock request.
