Replacement SSD Late 2015 iMac

The SSD within my Late 2015 27" iMac 27" has died. Has anyone replaced the SSD and if so what drive (brand/model) did you buy? Not fusion drive or hard drive as I am told they have a replacement path, but an iMac with a SSD has a different type of connector that creates a problem or so I am told by OWC support.

Can I replace the drive with a standard SSD, or is there more that needs to be done to make the computer work again? I probable should have worded that second part differently.

"The format must be Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for Sierra and older or... APFS for Mojave and newer"

You can upgrade from El Capitan.

Do High Sierra or Mojave first and then take it up to Catalina or Monterey.
