Street names sent from CarPlay to the car's HUD get truncated down to 5 characters in iOS 18

I've only experienced this issue after upgrading to iOS 18. My wife's phone on iOS 17 does not see this issue.

When using Apple Maps in CarPlay, my car displays the street name for the next turn in the HUD. It used to display the full name, but after updating to iOS 18, if the street name is more than 6-7 characters, it will truncate down to 5 characters (for example: "IL Ro..." instead of "IL Route 45", making the HUD pointless. Was this an intentional change or is it a bug?

My car has not received any updates, and the issue occurs on my phone in multiple cars. It does not occur on my wife's phone in the same cars. The only variable here is the iOS version.

Please fix this, Apple!

They aren’t even planning on fixing it unless more people actually complain directly to them. Apple engineers do not see the shortened street names as a problem at all. They do not monitor these boards. So until enough people call Apple at 1-800-275-2273 to complain, this will never get on their radar to be fixed through an update. I talked to their senior case advisor, and she told me the only way we will see a change is if people to call them directly instead of complaining on these boards.

PRO TIP: You will probably first get someone who wants to trouble shoot the problem by having you reset or restart your phone or car. DONT! We know no fix exists right now, so all this will do is disconnect your call or make you have deal with resetting your preferences again. Just skip to the part where you demonstrate the problem for them, and take a screen grab of the jacked up street names. Hopefully enough people will do this so we can get back to the full names before OIS 18.

This is the only thread I've seen about this and it's getting larger, so it's probably the best place. Keep in mind this isn't specific to Lexus but seems to be an issue across the board (so far this thread has confirmed Honda/Acura and Toyota/Lexus but the behavior suggests it's an iOS 18 issue and also not limited to just these cars). But it certainly won't hurt to have as much feedback as we can get.

I'm not sure how much noise it takes for Apple to read and respond to feedback in these threads, but it seems to be affecting a large number of people so hopefully this is enough to get them to fix it.

I have also posted in Apple's Feedback app which can only be accessed if you're on a beta version of iOS. I know that Apple's developers regularly monitor feedback from that app and will fix issues that are either critical or that receive a lot of similar complaints. So if possible, please get on a beta version of iOS 18 and file a ticket via their Feedback app.

Same for my 2024 Honda CR-V Sport Touring Hybrid, right after the last update. I thought I was losing my mind. I called Honda and they said it was an Apple CarPlay issue. My nephew just synced his Google Maps equivalent to my car and the dash readout is perfect: all there! Thank goodness for this thread. I searched online forever and was apparently not using the right criteria because I couldn’t find anything until now!!! I’ll call the phone number and report it.

I contacted Apple and they said these forums have no impact on what they decide to fix in the updates. They only listen to filed complaints. In order to fix this truncated name situation on Apple CarPlay, more people have to call: 1-800-275-2273. But don’t let them try and fix the problem over the phone. We all know there is no restart method of fixing this. Just demonstrate the problem while on the phone with them, THAT WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

UPDATE: I contacted get support.apple.com and reviewed the situation. After Erica disappeared for a while, she came back and suggested that we try this (I'm going to relay it to you). I opted not to (I kind of freaked out and figured I'd wait until the fix is incorporated into an update). There are extra steps if you use Windows which I don't. Please don't ask me any questions. If I wrote anything down wrong, oops. Sorry. I was surprised that no one (that I saw or recall) discussed this although I know there was reinstall talk about the car system and the phone system.

  1. back up ion iCloud.
  2. iPhone: recovery mode.
  3. Open finder.
  4. Plug phone into computer.
  5. restore iPhone from iCloud.

Again, the idea of essentially re-installing my iPhone scares me even though I realize it's probably not an issue since it's backed up to the cloud. Even so...

I have the same issue on my iPhone SE-2022 and Toyota Corolla Cross XSE after updating from IOS 17.7 to 18. I have my cars software updated prior to updating IOS related to a braking update, so the car was most recent and remains up to date

I called in to Apple on 10/18/204, spent a lot of time testing, ran through their protocol and process with the phone and the car, received Case ID1**********5 and was told the issue would be escalated. With each software update from Apple I hoped for resolution, but so far, nothing yet.

First thing to try (if you haven't already) is do a full restart of both the phone and the car. If that doesn't work, try connecting to a different car brand if you have one available, to rule out the phone being the problem.

I'm not seeing that particular issue on my Acura or my wife's Toyota, so that could very well be specific to Haval. I'd start by reaching out to anyone else you know who drives a Haval - if they're all experiencing the same issue, then you probably want to reach out to your dealer or even the manufacturer and see if there's a software update available for your car.

Hope this helps.

Absolutely! And if anyone drives a vehicle other than Honda/Acura or Toyota/Lexus (whether you own one or are in a rental) and still sees the issue, please post here with details so they can see it's a widespread issue.

If you're on a beta version of iOS, it will also be beneficial to file a feedback report in the Feedback app.

Same issue here. I have two cars with Apple Car play support and both show truncated street names in the HUD after I upgraded my iPhone 15 to iOS 18. My daughter who is running an earlier iOS on her iPhone 13 does not see the longer street names. The only known change for me was the upgrade to iOS 18. Cars have not received updated software between the time of desirable operation and undesirable operation.

Would like to see the previous mode of operation, longer street names, restored as either the default operation or as a user selectable option.
