Street names sent from CarPlay to the car's HUD get truncated down to 5 characters in iOS 18

I've only experienced this issue after upgrading to iOS 18. My wife's phone on iOS 17 does not see this issue.

When using Apple Maps in CarPlay, my car displays the street name for the next turn in the HUD. It used to display the full name, but after updating to iOS 18, if the street name is more than 6-7 characters, it will truncate down to 5 characters (for example: "IL Ro..." instead of "IL Route 45", making the HUD pointless. Was this an intentional change or is it a bug?

My car has not received any updates, and the issue occurs on my phone in multiple cars. It does not occur on my wife's phone in the same cars. The only variable here is the iOS version.

Please fix this, Apple!

They aren’t even planning on fixing it unless more people actually complain directly to them. Apple engineers do not see the shortened street names as a problem at all. They do not monitor these boards. So until enough people call Apple at 1-800-275-2273 to complain, this will never get on their radar to be fixed through an update. I talked to their senior case advisor, and she told me the only way we will see a change is if people to call them directly instead of complaining on these boards.

PRO TIP: You will probably first get someone who wants to trouble shoot the problem by having you reset or restart your phone or car. DONT! We know no fix exists right now, so all this will do is disconnect your call or make you have deal with resetting your preferences again. Just skip to the part where you demonstrate the problem for them, and take a screen grab of the jacked up street names. Hopefully enough people will do this so we can get back to the full names before OIS 18.

I am having a similar issue, but not quite the same. I apologise if it is too out of context.

I have an iPhone 15 Pro Max. I just bought a Haval H6 Ultra and the HUD displays the metres, and an arrow. But the arrow is always strait. no matter if it is supposed to direct you to turn or not. Also the street names remain the same as the street you were on when you set your destination on maps.

Any ideas?? I have contacted Apple, but they really couldn't help.

Is anyone else having any issues like this?

Is this discussion board the best place to have affected Lexus owners post, in terms of communicating the issue to Apple? Is there another Apple site to post ios bugs like this? I'm thinking of setting up a thread about this issue over at the Lexus owner's board that lets folkd report the issue to Apple, and I want to post the best possible link.

Thank you! I talked to a senior support person over the phone about this and showed him exactly what is happening and gave him a detailed account. He has created a support ticket for me for Apple to hopefully start looking into this. I agree, the more people contact them about this, the more aware they will be that this is in fact an issue and the more likely they will be to come up with a solution.

Thank you for this description - definitely helps our case if Apple knows you talked to Honda first and they said it was Apple's issue, and that it works fine with Google. I have a case number for my individual case but they didn't give me a ticket number for the actual internal ticket they opened with their development team.

If we can learn that ticket number, does that mean we can call Apple Support and just say we’re having “that”? My call got very complicated and confusing because they wanted me to forget the car and re-Connect my CarPlay. That’s their protocol. Well My Lexus didn’t want to cooperate and ended up disconnecting me from Apple support. Took awhile for me to reconnect CarPlay. A hour later …. That was all unnecessary and I don’t even think I ended up getting the issue on record.
