iPhone 16 Pro Max Touch responsiveness issues.

My iPhone 16 pro max has a delayed response to the touch and it’s also skipped my touch inputs. It’s mostly happening with the keyboard and the back button on top.

I do have a glass screen protector installed but have seen a lot of other people complaining without the screen protector.

It’s a very wide spread problem.

I initially bought the Ailun screen protectors on Amazon, and immediately after the phone was not as responsive, and I figured it’s because my fingers were cold at the time. After a day of use, I removed the protector the the problem went away.

i subsequently bought QHOHQ screen protectors on amazon, and same unresponsive problem.

Then I bought the expensive Zagg protector, while it was better, it still was not up to part and I removed it!

12/25 Update:

  • I got an iPhone 16 pro max on black friday. Went through 4 screen protector brands and they all made my texting less responsive and less accurate
  • Went to the first Apple store and they ran a multi-touch screen diagnosis and told me the hardware passed, therefore I needed to download the latest iOS and to buy the $40 in-store Belkin screen protector. I don't believe in buying a specific (incredibly expensive) screen protector, but after updating iOS, problem persisted
  • Went back to a second Apple store. I explained my story, and they had the worst attitude, and told me to reset my iPhone and do not back up from the cloud or my phone. Ultimately, I asked them to run the same multi-touch screen diagnosis again, and this time it came back FAILED. They replaced the screen on the spot, and now the cheapest screen protector from Amazon works just fine!

I am also experiencing this touch screen problem from the very beginning when I got my 16 pro max in September. At the moment the phone is on ios 18.1 and the issue has been narrowed by a bit, but it is still there and is so fr annoying.

The issue I am seeing with the touch screen can be reproduced by touching and holding the very edge of the display, with right hand thumb for example, and with the left hand finger try to slide on the display, and it has frozen. In my opinion most of these issues are caused by the "edge detection algorithm", once you touch the edge of the display, it becomes unresponsive, and making us think that the keyboard doesn't work how it should (not impressed at all how it works anyway). I have tried to reproduce this in the video link "iphone 16 pro max touch screen freezing"

Also regarding the text navigation and correction, I totaly dislike how you navigate through the written text, it is so difficult to point (by touching with your finger) to where you want the cursor to be, e.g. in front, back or between letters of a word , it is giving me headaches. But this is another issue, and I hope they address them both in the end. 2024

You don't have to place your finger on the text to place the curser or anything. In the box you type the words, slide your finger there to move the cursor around.

on my iPhone 16 Pro, same issues. Tried it with and without screen protector .. same issues. When I do a restart, everything works fine for a couple of hours. Please fix it … FAST!

If nothing helps, instead of waiting for Apple to release an update which may never come for your issue, schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar and show Apple what you're experiencing.

After updating to iOS 18.1, I feel that typing overall has improved from before I updated, but I'm still noticing issues particularly with the "backspace" button. That touch button on the keyboard appears to become unresponsive at times especially when tapping it multiple times in a row (as if when going back a few characters in a word to correct a mistake). I believe while many use predictive text here and there, many people are in the habit of using the backspace to go back multiple characters to correct a mistake while typing. I think this may be why it appears to be so widespread. So I'm sad to report, as of my update to 18.1, I'm still having this issue. This isn't indicative of an issue with the screen protector. Everything else runs fairly smoothly.

Has anyone tried (and I’m not recommending this but) using the phone without a Case?

I have suffered quietly on the 16 Pro Max first hoping it was software but not even 18.2.1 fixed it. We all know by now it’s NOT the screen protector and I’ve even turned off the Camera Control but still unresponsive touchscreen is a major pain for me. Literally practically painful since I have to push harder on the screen to type and I have RSI in fingers and hands.

I still have a 12Pro Max that’s incredibly responsive on same iOS 18.2.1.

But I randomly took the case off 16Pro Max to clean the backside and started using it and seeing an improvement. Am I imagining this or has anyone else seen improvement without a case on the phone ?? Appreciate input, thank you.

For some people it is working well without the case for some it’s working well without the screen protector. Some are able to improve the touch experience by changing the sensitivity in the settings. I am able to get better response by disable the camera button. You shouldn’t need to do all these things with a new phone. If you are within the return window just get it replaced and try to find the one without the problem. As there is no solution for the touch screen issue.

Well… iOS 18.1 was released today. We all must hope that this will fix the issue. So far after update, I’ve been typing this reply on the affected iPhone 16 Pro Max and it seems a bit… better? But that may be wishful thinking on my part. I will use it in “real life”scenarios and monitor it and check back here. Please do the same! 🤞
