iOS 18 photos app error attempting to save portrait photo with definition or noise reduction edits

Recently found this thread and I'm having the same issue. Some, but not all, photos taken with my iPhone 16 Pro on iOS 18.1 give an error message, "There was an error saving this photo. Please try again later." when I attempt to make edits. I cannot figure out the pattern.

Interestingly, if I duplicate the photo as a still photo (not Live Photo), I can make edits on the duplicate.

Super annoying bug.

I found a fix in my case

I disabled the definition edits and was able to save the portrait photo with the portrait lighting modified, I hope it works for others

Yes, I am having the error while running iPhone 16 Pro Max iOS 18.0.1. Have tried several hard resets and still I can’t save the “edited” file. It is happening on both iPhone 16 Pro Max and also iPad Pro M4 13” running iPadOS 18.0.1. So, this confirms it is a bug on both systems.

I updated my iPad (iPad OS 18.1) and iPhone iOS 18.1) and edited three pictures successfully without error messages. I will keep experimenting and reporting.

Not fixed in 18.1. 16 Pro. Seems to be almost random. Duplicating the photo does not work unless you duplicate as a Still Photo but that removes all depth, creative control, and live info.

This has been happening to me as well since I did the first (iOS 18) update after purchasing the iPhone 16 Pro. It is driving me crazy! I can use the "copy edits" feature to copy the photo-work I've done, but I have to go in and paste the edits, recrop, etc. when I give up. I've never been able to keep resaving and it eventually "take" once I get the error.

I can crop a photo and rotate but in portrait mode when I start making changes I get the error.

Resetting the phone had no effect. Turning off WiFi no effect. Turning off iCloud had no effect.

After trial and error saving EVERY change singly, I found that DEFINITION triggered the problem.

This may not singly be the culprit as it could be more complex reaction of multiple settings with DEFINITION.

I am getting the same error and it’s frustrating !! I left noise reduction to 0 and still spinning and giving that error -

I'd like to add that for some photos this does not depend on any particular setting being adjusted. For affected photos, simply doing something like crop with no other adjustments will result in the error.

This is the buggiest version of iOS in recent times. Another bug with the Photos app is exporting Cinematic videos. Good luck exporting anything over 5 minutes. I have some 25-30 minute footage and the only way to get it out is a USB-C drive connected to the USB-C port on iPhone 16 Pro.

When in Edit mode, tap "Adjust" and swipe to the right through the various adjustment tools. "Definition" is to the right of "Sharpness," and the icon is a triangle with a single line extending from the hypotenuse of the triangle through to the right angle. To the right of that tool is "Noise Reduction," which is a circle cut in half with the lower-right half filled with white dots.

I believe we will get an answer when iOS/iPadOS 18.1 are released.
