Samsung Odyssey Monitor Causes Kernel Panics When Connected via DisplayPort 1.4 visa Docking Station
I've been chasing my tail on this for months. I've spoken to multiple levels of Samsung Support, Apple Support, Apple Geniuses, CalDigit Support (Apple and CalDigit have been very responsive while Samsung has been one of the WORST customer service experiences I've had EVER). I've searched through Apple Discussions, Reddit, Macworld, etc for solutions, and while there are numerous others having this exact same issue FOR YEARS, I have not seen a single resolution. This is my last resort.
Crash report and Etrecheck report attached. Please, for the love of all things holy in the world, please help me and thousands of others stop pulling our collective hairs out.
Behavior: Kernel Panic when waking from sleep, ONLY when connected to the TS4 and ONLY when connected via DisplayPort 1.4. Crashes vary from simple restarts to Recovery screens requiring reinstallation of the OS
Equipment: M2 MacBook Air 15", CalDigit TS4, Samsung Monitor (Odyssey G70NC)
Things I have tried:
- Booted into Safe Mode
- Disconnect ALL peripherals from the dock AND the MacBook Air
- Changed out the DisplayPort cable with 3 others
- Changed out the Thunderbolt cable with 2 others
- Connected to an LG monitor with DisplayPort 1.4 - Mac does NOT panic
- Genius Bar completed a full reset of MacOS 14 and Firmware
- Upgraded to MacOS 15
- Sent logs to Apple Support for review by an engineer - was informed the monitor is causing the problem
- Connected via USB-C to DisplayPort 1.4 cable - Mac does NOT panic, but then I have a dedicated port on the dock I cannot use, and I lose a TB port for other purposes.
- Unplugged the CalDigit for 60+ seconds, booted Mac into Safe Mode, connected the CalDigit
- Updated the Firmware on the CalDigit TS4 - both the Power Deliver firmware and 39.1
- Sent logs to CalDigit for review - have not received an update on this
- CalDigit informs me Samsung Odyssey monitors have been known to have issues
- Samsung Authorized Repair Tech informs me Samsung and Apple don't like each other and to not expect Samsung to resolve the problem
I believe I have taken exhaustive steps to come to a resolution as I do not want to purchase a new monitor, but I am not leaving any stone unturned. If Samsung simply needs to provide an updated firmware or driver then I want to publicly rake them over the coals for not doing so. They are still actively supporting this monitor, and everything else works fine.
Desperately hoping for a solution...
MacBook Air 15″, macOS 15.0
