iPhone camera app keeps crashing after iOS 18 Update

My personal favorite is the fact that I had recently installed the update before 18.2 (presuming it was 18.1, currently installing 18.2 now) on my iPhone 13 Pro Max. Didn't have issues with the camera at all. I use it constantly, taking photos of notes, screens from other devices to reference data, and use it to scan original samples for graphic design work. It's faster to AirDrop it to my Mac than to go to the scanning station and saving to the network.

I get a text on Sunday 12/08/24 by my cell provider congratulating me on paying off my device and giving me a link to deals on the latest iPhone. I thought "that was nice of them, but I'm good for now".

Less than five minutes later, I get weird "old crt watching a bad VHS" color glitch artifacts in the camera interface and on the preview from the camera. They would come and go at random. Movement had no effect (implying maybe a loose connection of some kind). It would randomly come and go but the photos all looked okay.

Restarted and it kept happening. Now five days later, the app just locks up and shows no preview (only a blank preview, like it was not initializing the camera). The only options that showed a preview were the SlowMo and Panorama camera options. Restarting at this point affords you a few photos or a video before it happens again.

Hoping that this 18.2 update may have a positive effect on the problem but I very much doubt it. I promise I'm not a tinfoil hat wearing conspiracy theorist, but this was such a weird coincidence to be congratulated on paying off my phone only for it to just lose basic functions.

So frustrating. I'm using 14 Plus. In ios 18.1, this bug happened occasionally. But when i upgrade to ios 18.2, camera & flashlight totally broken. Last night, I could use front cam but now it's broken too.

Updated my 16 Pro Max to iOS 18.1 last night and it seems to have fixed it 🤞 hoping it stays this way.

I don't have a fix to your issue, but I have a question related to another problem (see here). I assume that you had iOS 17.7 (or some other version) on the iPhone 13 mini before you bumped. Did you experience any problems with the keyboard (as described here)?

I have iOS 17.7, which is basically unusable because letters are repeated multiple times whenever I try to write at a decent speed (it also happens in the calculator, screen unlock, etc.).

One of the options I'm considering is bumping to iOS 18, but reading your message, I'm not sure it is a good idea. I either cannot write or take pictures. Those are not such great options...

Hmm, not good news indeed. There is no point bumping to iOS 18 now for me. I'll try to send my iPhone for repair next week to confirm whether it is HW or SW issue for the keyboard problem. The camera problem should be a pure SW issue, so hopefully, they will release 18.1 with the fix soon.

iPhone 13 Pro camera is also failing after iOS 18 upgrade. Can’t use camera, Face ID and I don’t think it is a hardware issue. Camera worked when we restarted but only for a while. Later it failed again.

I have the same issue with my iPhone 12 Pro. This happens with default camera settings and no zoom. It is random and it can happen multiple times. For example, I tried taking a picture 3 times in a row in normal daylight, without success. They were all blank. Then I changed position and the camera worked without any issues, every time.

As a side note, I had my battery replaced at Apple Store prior os upgrade and the phone passed all hardware tests.

Is there a way to reset the camera?

I'm also very frustrated with all the issues I'm having with my iPhone 13 since the iOS 18 update. My camera crashes, screen keeps freezing, lagging when I type. Tried rebooting. I have contacted Apple, but told to take it to a store. That's a 2 hour drive there and back for me. My phone was fine until the update. Now it's practically useless. 😠

My iPhone 12 Pro camera goes blank when I try to use it. If I change the zoom it will SOMETIMES work on 2X for one picture. My flashlight has also quit working since I updated to IOS 18.0. I hope there is an update to fix the issues soon.

same with my 13 mini after iOS 18 upgrade. try to take a photo and crashes the app. restart temporary fixes it, but you already missed the shot. i believe the flash light also does not work from lock screen now after upgrade.

For me it shows an error that says "Unknown part" for camera. I have not visited the service center yet in the last 3 years for my phone and I am not sure how to solve for it. With no updates, I am not sure I will be able to trade-in this for a 16 Pro Max. I suppose this will be solved with a software update only

iOS 18.0.1 is now out with some fixes which includes: - Camera may freeze when recording macro mode video on the Ultra Wide camera in 4K with HDR turned off on iPhone 16 Pro models

which is not exactly my issue as i have a 13 mini. anyone taking the plunge hoping this would fix the problem?

Same. I can’t open safari without it crashing. Absolutely crazy that these problems are happening. I have 16 pro with iOS 18 update. Is it definitely a software issue? My phones brand new so can’t tell.

This keeps happening to my iPhone 16 pro. I literally got this phone because my iPhone 13 stopped working completely after iOS 17.6.something. What a waste of money and what a sad monopoly we’re in. Go back to the Apple Store for a replacement under Apple care and they’ll tell you they gotta charge you for an attempted repair before seeing if they HAVE to give the overpaying customer a new phone.
