iPhone 16 pro Video Sound Recording Issues

Hello,

I just purchased a new iPhone 16 pro. I am a band director, and I frequently record videos of my band's performances from the press box of our football stadium. After recording a video of their performance this evening, I tried to watch it and noticed that the sound fades and in and out, and is often distorted at loud volumes. Is this a hardware or software problem, and are there any settings I can alter to record better audio?

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Here's example of concert shot ruined by my Iphone 16Pro:

There is one second of decent sound when phone is facing scene with it's screen. While it's facing scene with backface cameras - sound gets muffled.

Phone passed tests at authorized service center. They say microphones work this way now and refused in repairs.

My previous Iphone 14Pro never had such issues.

No. I took it to the Apple Store and hardware checked out so they told me to do a reset to new phone and reinstall software. So I did that and had to redownload all my apps and it took half a day. Still didn’t fix it. Took it back to the Apple Store yesterday because that’s what they told me to do. The guy helping me yesterday said this phone isn’t made to record videos of someone singing in a room or any music. He told me to get an external mic and offered to sell me one. I told him my old iPhones never had this issue and he didn’t have an answer to that. He said he sees this a lot and people are trying to do things with their iPhone 16pros that they’re not made to do. I was not happy and got up and left! Now I have an expensive phone that I’m told isn’t made to record videos of my kids singing in church.

I also have this problem with external microphones and it is very frustrating. Sound is worse than on my iPhone 13. I have tried different external mics and still the same problem.

I downloaded the excellent BlackMagic camera app which has more setting to customise mics and... same problem. I think it might be a hardware flaw in the phone itself.

This would explain why Apple is quiet about this and has not fixed it. Very disappointing in a £1200 phone.

I went to the Apple Store this morning for this exact issue and also talked to Apple tech support by phone. They ran a diagnostic on my phone and proclaimed that everything was fine, but my video recordings still sound terrible. I notice that when I adjust the sound in Spatial Audio, if I go to the left, it sounds OK, but to the right sounds choppy and cuts in and out. Voice memos sound fine, so it seems like it might be a software issue? Since I have AppleCare, they're sending me a new phone. I hope that solves the problem - I'll let you know.

Further testing showed sound is recorded while capturing video in the camera app, BUT sound from all videos is MUTED whenever the phone ringer is also MUTED. By just un-MUTING the ringer, I could hear the audio captured on all prior videos taken on my iPhone 16 Pro Max.

So, just un-MUTE the ringer [using the Action Button or in Settings under Sound & Haptics] to hear the recorded sound as you play back your videos taken with the camera app.

iPhone 16 Pro Max.

I have this issue too, it's extremely frustrating. The sound on recorded videos (whether via camera app, snapchat, etc.) is extremely muffled. It almost sounds like you're underwater or physically covering the microphone. It goes in and out too––sometimes the first second or two is crystal clear and then it gets muffled again.

The phone passed remote diagnostic testing when I contacted Apple support so I had to take it into an Apple Store. It passed further testing there but thankfully the Genius bar employee gave me a brand new phone after I showed him what was happening in person. A day later, it's happening again on the 2nd phone so I'm convinced it's a software issue. I've tried switching to stereo (and even mono) instead of spatial in camera recording settings and it doesn't help.

I'm so upset that Apple hasn't figured this out yet. Our daughter is just starting to say her first words; I keep trying to catch them on video only to discover that the audio wasn't captured correctly :(
