iMessage stops working when on VPN

Since upgrade to Sequoia, IMessage is blocked when Express VPN is on. Missed IMessages are also not shown after deactivating the VPN

Mac mini, macOS 15.0

For ExpressVPN, until an update comes out that allows Advanced Protection features, this is the workaround:

Go into Preferences
Turn off all features in Advanced Protection
Select IKEv2 under Protocol

I'm concerned that allowing incoming connections could pose a security risk. Can we restrict it to only allow iMessage connections?

I noticed that even after disabling the vpn and also adding the messages to the FW it still does not work for me.

I do not have firewall turned on-- and these steps worked for me.
