In addition to t.moe's excellent advice, AirTags are not intended to track people or pets. Once away from your phone, they will beep which can be annoying to both.

Does your sone have an iPhone? If so, you should set up location sharing. If he doesn't, there may be other apps that allow location sharing between iPhones and Android phones (Life 360?).

AirTags are not GPS devices. Assuming you just give him an AirTag, the only time it might work is when your son is in proximity to an iPhone that is part of the Find My network. If you think you'd be able to track the location of the AirTag always and in real-time, that would not be the case.
