Camera app crashing on my iPhone 16 Pro Max

Having issue on my iPhone 16 pro max 512 gb when launching camera control from Lock Screen it’s crashing the camera app. Screen turns black and crashing. Also phone seems to be getting abnormally hot when playing games or recoding video for a short period of time. Anyone else experiencing these issues and wondering if it’s a software or hardware issue.

IOS 18.0.1 did NOT solve the camera crashing issue for me.

I too have exactly same issue with my new iphone 16 Pro max 256GB. The camera app crashes when its opened from Camera Control & try to click a pic. And phone becones too hot. There is another issue that microphone becomes unresponsive at that time. All excitement of new iPhone vanished within 3weeks of purchasing. Apple, is there anyone listening????? Please test new devices rigorously before marketing. My iPhone 12 Pro Max never faced any issue

I agree and after having the phone for over a month I’m really fed up that I have to keep restarting my phone just to take one photo for it to crash again. Taking everything off to start again is not an option. APPLE THIS NEEDS FIXING OR IM SENDING IT BACK UNTIL THIS PHONE IS FIT FOR PURPOSE!

So what happened when you updated to iOS 18.1, released this week, which for most people completely resolved their camera issues?

This problem is solved now. One thing I noticed was it seems to be more common to users that restored from old backups. So after a while I started noticing the problem didn’t occurred even before the upgrade to 18.1 and then when I finally did the upgrade it never occurred again so I would advise everyone to just do the upgrade and flag it as a defect if it occurs in any case; which I don’t think it’s will

I have returned my iphone 16pro and awaiting replacements under the same terms as well...so your story sounds interesting . Are you saying do the first in option 2 here? Reset iPhone settings to their defaults – Apple Support (UK)

Please update us all when 3/4 days has passed as 36 hours seems too short a time to be sure it's fixed given the other comments on this forum but I wish you lots of luck!

It's normal for the phone get warm when recording video or playing games. Plus if you just got the phone in the last few days, it's working behind the scenes to index millions of bytes of data.

For the camera issue, I've not experienced such an issue on either our 16 Pro or 16 Pro Max. I'd recommend doing a Forced Restart and see if that helps with the camera issue:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume up button
  2. Then immediately press and release the volume down button
  3. Then immediately and KEEP HOLDING the side power button. KEEP HOLDING past the swipe to power off and KEEP HOLDING until you see the Apple Logo, then let go
  4. Once your phone restarts, enter your passcode and try the camera capture button

Hello Dogcow-Moof, here's what we know:

  1. It happens with 18 and 18.0.1, but not 18.1. That's my experience.
  2. It happens if you have transferred from an old iPhone to a new iPhone 16 (the variant does not seem to matter although the majority seem to have Pros, Max or otherwise).
  3. It goes away if you power-cycle the device every 24h; the 24h seems to be relevant. I did a force-reset late afternoon one day and it stopped working late afternoon the following day.

So when you say it happens to very few users, that might be true across the majority of iPhone 16 users. But what happens if you filter out:

  1. People who habitually turn their mobile off once a day (e.g. overnight)?
  2. People who did not use the transfer from an old iPhone to the iPhone 16? (Which would probably pull in ex-Androiders)?

My suggestion would be to take an out of the box iPhone 16 Pro [Max]. Transfer from, say, an iPhone 11 Pro Max that has been used (i.e. not a virgin one, although you could try a virgin one to rule out the transfer process).

LMK if there is anything I can do to help with mine, assuming I can downgrade back to 18. But 18.1 fixes the issue. However, a recent recording had no sound, so I guess I have the mic issue. I'm deaf so I rely on others to point it out to me.
