Having issue on my iPhone 16 pro max 512 gb when launching camera control from Lock Screen it’s crashing the camera app. Screen turns black and crashing. Also phone seems to be getting abnormally hot when playing games or recoding video for a short period of time. Anyone else experiencing these issues and wondering if it’s a software or hardware issue.

Worked with Apple Support. We tried reapplying the latest upgrade via my Mac and the phone in restore mode. Problem persisted a couple days later. I was advised the next step was to completely wipe the phone and reinstall everything from scratch, not from backup, as the culprit is likely somewhere in my backup. I did that over the weekend, took about 8 hours. It's been two days without the issue returning. I will continue to monitor.

And what happened when you updated your iPhone to iOS 18.1 which was released yesterday, which many reported fixed their camera issues?
I don't have this issue, no one I know with a 16 has this issue, so it's got to be your device or your carrier.
Try asking the Apple Store to replace your device; if you've been there four times they should have done so by now.

The vast majority of people have never seen this issue, so it seems it is an issue with your phone.

I've had a 16 Pro Max since launch day and have taken hundreds of photos along with video, and have never had this happen.
18.1b7 solving all my problems + launching the camera is much quicker (and so is FaceID).

It did not solve the problem for me either. I spoke to Apple support today and they said that they are working on a subsequent update to correct the continued problem. No release date.
Switching off the noise detection has solved the problem for me. Permanently!
18.1 (not 18.0.1) is the fix you’re looking for. Don’t waste your time restoring or starting over.
Agreed. People should upgrade to 18.1 before bothering with the various workarounds that have been proposed here earlier. For me, this and also other issues with laggy performance were resolved.
The 18.1 seems to have solved this issue of camera issues
I'm seeing this same issue on my new iPhone 16 Pro Max 256GB model. A restart fixes it for a few days. My last restart was 6 days ago, the day after I got the device. Just ran diagnostics w/ Apple support and all camera sensors are working as expected. I'm guessing this is a software?

In your case when you say your last reset was 6 days ago I’m confused. Are you saying the issue is still apparently fixed after resetting it since it was last done 6 days ago…1 day after you got it? Or are you saying you haven’t reset it again after the one time 6 days ago? Did Apple Support suggest it was a software issue? Offer a replacement if they couldn’t say for sure if it was a software issue? Thankfully I haven’t had any of the issues mentioned on my 16 Pro Max (so far) and until Apple official says there is a known software issue (or releases an update that says it addresses the issues mentioned) it would be anyone’s guess as to what is causing the issue or is it is definitively a software issue
I raised a bug report on this a week or so ago. Restarting the phone etc is a temporary fix. I’ve had numerous instances now of having to restart the phone in order to take a pic by which time the moment has gone. This is so obvious I’m struggling to see how this got through QA. Shame there’s no recognition of the issue yet (If I’ve missed it could someone share a link).
Why are we having to force reset BRAND NEW phones already out the box. This is quite ridiculous!
time to return the phone. Never have I ever had this issue and so quite frequently. This is very frustrating when trying to take a photo on the fly and can’t bc it crashes. Not very beneficial.
Having the same issue on iPhone 16. Camera regularly fails and crashes to a black screen, but audio/video warning led stays lit on the Dynamic Island then eventually disappears. A reboot will temporarily fix, but crashes again after a few photos.
I also have the problem with the camera on my new iPhone 16 Pro 512 GB with IOS18. The camera app crashes regularly, at least once a day. The microphone stays on for some time and the device gets hot. It automatically switches from power-saving mode to normal mode. It is always necessary to restart the iPhone. I hope it is purely a software problem. Otherwise I would expect Apple to issue a recall. 🤷♂️
