How do I fix heating issue on my iPhone 16 Pro?

Hey there! I just got the iPhone 16 Pro 1TB, and it’s overheating like crazy. It’s kinda scary, feels like it might explode in my hand while I’m typing this. I bought it less than 24 hours ago. Any tips? Also, what’s the return policy? Thanks

Some activities such as charging or a lot of computational activity (e.g., video), generate heat. Some warmth is to be anticipated.* "Keep your iPhone, the power adapter, and any wireless charger in a well-ventilated area when in use or charging."** Read this article about keeping your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch within acceptable operating temperatures - If your iPhone or iPad gets too hot or too cold - Apple Support

Changes in software such as upgrades may introduce new features which may add to power drain and heat generation. Check Settings > Battery to see if there are apps running that use a lot of power. If there are, decide if you can turn off a service such as Settings > General > Background app refresh when an app is in the background, or Settings > Privacy > Location Services. It could also be if you first got it then it is doing some setting up, requiring a lot of computation. Give it a day or two and see if there's the same problem.

I got my 16 pro in May 2025, I haven’t even had it a month and it’s overheated twice, the first time it was on the charger and it said charging will continue when your phone cools down. This time it didn’t get so hot as to trigger the warning and it was not on a charger. It was during a Zoom call. But I am well past iOS 18.0.1.

What you saw when charging is NOT overheating. It's a new feature when at least a 20W charger is used, for fast charging. We ALL get this message now. You also did NOT see a Thermometer on your screen, which you would have if your phone had actually overheated. Your phone will charge rapidly to 80%, then it will pause charging, and display the message charging will continue when your phone cools down. Again, this is completely normal and NOT cause for concern.

Same problem. First day with the SIM in. It was just very warm compared to to iPhone 14 Pro which was next to it not doing very much apart from streaming music to the car. The 16 pro was very warm indeed. I think there is a fault. Never had this with the 14 pro streaming music for hours long journeys in the car. I’ll use it for 2 more days before returning it if it happens again

Hi.

Have updated my iPhone 16 Pro to 18.2.1.

When watching movies in Apple TV that I’ve downloaded to my iPhone (was watching ‘Sliding Doors’ just recently), it would overheat and the Apple TV app would just close without warning, and would then just see the home screen. The iPhone 16 Pro was seriously hot, so hot it was uncomfortable to hold. Doesn’t matter what I watch in Apple TV, if I have downloaded it to my iPhone 16 Pro, the iPhone overheats. !

Earlier today I streamed ‘No Other Land’ in Apple TV… Meaning I did not download this film to the iPhone 16 Pro… I just streamed it through WiFi… And the iPhone did NOT overheat.

Thus I tried downloading films (on this iPhone 16 Pro) in NetFlix and Disney Plus apps and watched them. The iPhone 16 Pro did NOT overheat. Streaming films through NetFlix and Disney Plus also did NOT cause this iPhone 16 Pro to overheat.

Only when playing movies that I’ve downloaded to my iPhone 16 Pro within the Apple TV app, does the iPhone seriously overheat… And the Apple TV app closes when it gets so hot I have to put it down on the table.

My new iPhone 16 Pro only seems to seriously overheat when playing films that have been downloaded to the phone in Apple TV… NOT when streaming film from WiFi using Apple TV.

Apple need to look at this as soon as possible.

I played on it for an half hour and had to stop because the phone was so hot. never had that problem whit my phone 11. really hope they fix it., because expect for the overheating issue im pretty satisfied whit the phone

Faster cores generate more heat, batteries become less efficient at higher heat because of increased resistance. More memory, larger batteries, and apps that aren’t optimized still are what you’re fighting.

Depending on where you live and the ambient temperature is a large factor. I live in Florida and in summer my iPhone will start out maybe 20° to 30°F warmer than someone in a cool climate. I just don’t worry about it anymore.

Everyone, the reason your phones may have been overheating or the battery draining fast, it’s not what you think. Here’s my information I’ve collected since owning the iPhone 16 pro max for over 6 months:

  1. if it overheats a lot, the problem is your charger or power brick, get the original one
  2. if it overheats or battery dies too fast, give it a few days, otherwise it’s just a software issue and just update your phone
  3. after trying everything, use it until it learns from your usage

Hope that helps

My iPhone 16 pro is about 6 months old and it keeps getting really hot when I use i for longer than 10 mins. This never happened before with iPhone 14. It’s getting too hot to touch. Seems like this is an issue that needs addressed with so many people reporting the phone’s overheating.

No overheating issues here. iPhone 16. Don’t use it for any extreme stuff though, such as gaming. Some people have reported success by removing the cover to allow the device to cool down, and that used to work for me too when I had this same issue with my iPhone 12.
