Unable to login to my Hotmails Account

Hi, I have two hotmail.co.uk email accounts that work fine on my iPhone but have recently become offline on my imac which is a 24" M1, 2021 running Sonoma 14.4.1.

I have repeatedly tried to reconnect them and they ask for a password which I enter correctly and then "unable to verify account name or password". So I am effectively locked out of the two hotmail.co.uk accounts on my iMac.

Please can you advise how I can resolve this problem.

I had received emails from Microsoft but assumed they were spam and took no action.

P.S. Will this problem eventually affect the hotmail accounts on my iPhone ?

Many thanks.

This is because Microsoft have recently changed their security requirements. To fix this, remove the hotmail accounts from your Mac (under Settings > Internet Accounts (or just Accounts)), and then add them back choosing either Outlook or Microsoft Exchange for the account type. Either of these will comply with the updated security requirements from Microsoft.

Is the issue specifically a password one? Does it say that? It helps to include the exact message.

I really think, though, that this is a Microsoft issue. For several years now it has been on and off with us getting access to Hotmail on Macs using Mail. Nothing has changed on our end, it's just that one day it might work and another it won't. We don't have any issues on iPhones. It also isn't necessarily a password issue. Usually it is simply a "cannot connect" issue which implies it's a server issue. Again, the iPhones still work and everything else in our house works so it isn't our router.

In our case we are running two different macOS versions on our computers. I rarely use my computer to read Hotmail but when I do it works. My wife uses it everyday and she is the one with problems. It's a connection issue and once changing servers seemed to clear it up, but other times it does not help but the next day things are working again. Again all pointing in Microsoft's direction.

Realize that Microsoft has no reason to ensure compatibility between its servers and Apple's Mail app. If you contact them then I will bet they will just tell you to use Outlook. I also don't think this is a widespread compatibility issue with Sonoma Mail since I haven't seen anybody else complain.

Also, have you tried signing in with a web browser? I don't know that that will provide a solution to the Mail application problem but at least it will tell you it isn't your computer having a problem talking to Hotmail.

I have added the accounts again as you suggested and it seems to have solved the problem so thank you very much.

I didn't actually delete the original hotmail accounts that would not connect but the same email accounts now under Microsoft Exchange work fine.

Is there any disadvantage in not deleting the original ones that wouldn't connect. ?

If I do delete them now, is there any risk that their deletion might impact ones with the same name that I now have set up under Microsoft Exchange. ?

Many thank again to you all.

It is going to the same account, you're just using a different pathway. It's like two streets leading to the same place, but one street is now closed. You can still get to your house using the other street. Nothing has changed about your house.

You may not need to actually delete the old server, but it serves no purpose now. If anything, if you still see error messages because it is still trying to use that path too, then you need to delete it.

This isn't a solution for you, but your post does not surprise me at all. My wife uses Hotmail on her Mac and frequently there is some issue or other that eventually clears up on its own. I use Hotmail on my iPhone and I have never had a problem. She says when she has a problem on her Mac, her iPhone can still get access to the account. So basically I personally think it is Microsoft messing with something behind the scenes.

I know that there was mention of Outlook upping security requirements on applications getting access to their accounts. I haven't seen a flood of posts from users so maybe it was just on a specific level of accounts such as those provided by corporations and universities that contract email accounts through them? https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/modern-authentication-methods-now-needed-to-continue-syncing-outlook-email-in-non-microsoft-email-apps-c5d65390-9676-4763-b41f-d7986499a90d

I'm very grateful for the two responses that I have had and realise that I can download Outlook as a possible solution. However, I am very keen to stay using the mail that comes with the iMac and I still have the problem mentioned above.

I have tried everything I can think of to take the two hotmail.co.uk accounts on my iMac back online but it the passwords are never accepted.

Any other ideas would be most appreciated.

Strangely, someone I know is having the same problem but with a hotmail.com account and on her iPhone.

As I mentioned, my two hotmail accounts that wont work on my iMac are fine on my iPhone.

HELP !!!!

Thank you,

Thank you Limnos for your helpful reply.

To cover your specific points:-

I agree that it looks like a Microsoft issue.

The actual message that I get when I try enter the password to try to connect is "unable to verify account name or password".

I have loaded Outlook.com through the web browser and I can access both hotmail.co.uk accounts with no problem. Which suggests that my computer is not having a problem using Outlook.

I have also uploaded the Outlook app onto my iMac and can also access both hotmail.co.uk accounts with no problem.

I am interested in your comment about changing servers and wonder if you would be kind enough to advise how I can do this as it might, hopefully, allow me back into my hotmail.co.uk account thro apple mail.

Thank you so much.

Again, it is all going to the same place. There aren't two copies of anything. If I call you on your cellphone number and arrange a meeting, I don't need to call you on your landline to arrange the meeting too. The thing now is, one of your two pretend telephone services is disconnected and doesn't really serve any purpose. You can't call your email server that way anymore.
