iPhone 16 Pro Max Camera app crashes when taking photo

Has anyone had issues with their 16 pro max camera shutting down when you try to take a photo?

The only way to fix the issue is to restart my phone, but it’s only a temporary fix as it will randomly start again.

I cannot screen record it happening, because when the camera glitches, my phone stops working and freezes for about 5 seconds.

The phone is fully updated.

I finished a call with Apple support. They ran a diagnostic test and found a hardware malfunction. The phone needs to be replaced.

I recommend calling into tech and asking for a diagnostic test. If they find the same hardware problem, you may need to get a new replacement.

It sucks since the phones are brand new, but I’d do it as soon as possible. Make sure you have apple care+ before calling in.

I wanted to give an update for anyone who needs it.

I had the phone replaced at the Genius Bar.

The new 16pro max replacement actually had the exact same problems the following day. Replacing the phone did not solve the issues.

I was told it might be a corruption in my previous backup. I was told to factory reset my phone (keeping the esim) and not to download the backup upon start up.

Since doing this, I have not had the problems anymore. I’m not sure yet what the next steps are going to be to retrieving my backup without the malfunction.

I just wanted to update that factory resetting without uploading my iCloud backup has resolved the issues I’ve been having.

-The new issue is to figure out what is in the backup that’s causing the malfunctions in the 16pro max.

Try to force reset your iPhone as shown below ⇢

  • Press and quickly release the volume up button.
  • Press and quickly release the volume down button.
  • Press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo

If a force restart is without success, make a reservation at your nearest Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to get in-person support. ⚛️

I am having the same problem. Called apple support today. Their steps to run a report that would log this issue begins with restarting my phone. As you know once the phone restarts the camera works fine for 1-1/2 days. The only issue logged was with my bluetooth. I had three choices at that point. Send my phone in to repair, express replacement BUT they charge you the full price of the new phone until the old phone is returned or make an appointment at an Apple store. I was told the techs at the store will repeat the testing and if come to same conclusion (a flaw with the hardware) the phone would be replaced.

I am also facing the same problem (shutting down camera). I went to apple store for tech support, they run the diagnostic and didn’t find any hardware or software problem. They recommended me to wait for next update and it will resolve. They made the note, if it will not be resolved with update then they will look further. It seems this problem is common and irritating.
