Issue with AirPods Pro 2 and iOS 18: Ringtone Volume Extremely Loud

Since updating my devices to iOS 18, I've encountered an issue with my AirPods Pro 2 when receiving calls. The problem I am encountering is that my ringtone plays through my airpods and the volume is directly linked to the ringtone volume set in the phone’s settings. However, the problem is that the ringtone plays at an extremely loud volume in my AirPods, loud enough to be heard from across the room. This is extremely uncomfortable and potentially harmful experience when I receive calls, as the sound blasts through my AirPods probably exceeds 100db!

Adjusting the ringtone volume in settings to reduce the volume in my AirPods is not a viable solution because it also affects the volume of other essential features, such as my alarm. Lowering the ringtone volume means my alarm becomes too quiet to wake me up in the morning, which makes this issue even more disruptive.

This problem is new and only started occurring after the iOS 18 update. I’m looking for any advice on how to fix or work around this issue without compromising my alarm volume.

With iOS 18.0.1 and AirPods 4, after iOS 18 update, my "Reduce Loud Sounds" (Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Headphone Safety) toggles on with 90 dbs. I remember, before update, it was deactivated and I didn't have any problems with ringtone volume with AirPods. In my case, toggle off "Reduce Loud Sounds", fix issue ringtone volume extremely loud. Also, toggle on with minimun setting (75 dbs) fix it, but it also affects "Music" reproduction (it is not possible to reach very loud volumes).

OMG it worked! Now I can hear my calls ringing and Siri call announcements through my AirPods Pro 2!

Simply by Turing off Headphone Accommodations!

i followed these instructions from another user:

“On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Headphone Accommodations, then turn off Headphone Accommodations.

If you did a hearing test and have turned on a hearing aid, please turn it off too.

Then, put your AirPods into the case and take them out again. It should help”

I put the answer here (more appropriate thread for this BUG):

"I had this problem. After reading a lot of suggestions that did not work. And unhelpful stuff like: "turn up the volume" (duh) I found a workaround to this BUG:

Put an airpod in your ear. This will enable it, so that AirPods shows up in Settings.

(test: Call yourself from someone else's phone. Verify that the call notification did not come through. Or it might be super faint/unhearable).

Scroll down to Hearing Assistance in Airpod settings

Turn OFF Hearing Aid feature.

(test again: Call yourself again from someone else's phone. Verify that the call notification did come through. On my phone it was very audible. Almost loud).

Then, Turn ON Hearing Aid feature. - the calls should still work.

(test again: Call yourself from someone else's phone. Verify that the call notification did come through. On my phone it was very audible).

Problem solved. For me.

Now here's where this is going to get frustrating: Apple likely has an uninitialized variable in their software, so almost ANYTHING could randomly turn it on or off. For me, I just happened to see it fixed with the Hearing Aid feature. For you it might be something else. Sadly, this may require you to just mash buttons, turn features on/off one at a time, and retest...until something works.

Good Luck."

This worked for me, but I wish to note a couple of things:

  1. The "Audio & Visual" item is in the "Hearing" subsection (as of iOS 18.3.1); it's not the name of the subsection itself. You can also go directly to Headphone Accommodations by using the Settings app's search field.
  2. Remember to take the last step: put the AirPods into their case and remove them after turning off Headphone Accommodations. (The fix didn't work for me until I did this.)

My issue was ring volume too low in AirPods rather than too high, but either way the volume gets messed up and so the issue appears to be the same.

I have the exact same issue since iOS 18! The incoming ring tone is deafening but after answering the call volume is at a normal level. None of the settings adjustments have helped and I have unpaired and repaired my AirPods and updated to 18.01 with no success. It is interesting because even with "hearing protection" on the incoming ringtone ignores the volume limit. I have seen this issue posted on other forums. I hope Apple comes out with a fix soon!

Absolutely. Spent 2 hours at Applestore today with “guy from the back” reinstalling, reconfiguring, phoning my phone over and over and finally getting 1 loud spectacular phone ringing instance but could not repeat. I walked out ****** with a replacement pair of pods (mine 3 days old) that still aren’t ringing.

Reinstalling THOSE at home and right off the install was different than my first pair that I ordered Black Friday Amazon (Amazon shipped beta level kit?). Hearing test looked different, menu procedure a bit different. For that one successful test phone call at the store it was great but pfffffft! My $39 Gonzo Buds work better than these (so far) and also keep Chinese servers up to date on my activity.

Big news! Who knew? For help/support (cause the store peeps don’t go there) you go online to Apple Support (I used the Support app - downloaded at AStore while (not) wasting a half hour while AirPods firmware updated?) Anyway made a call appointment and was walked through just getting phone calls just to ring into my pods. Was informed…<you have to do a call appointment with HEALTH support> HEALTH SUPPORT - that’s a huge miss on Apple’s part. Hours banging my head on the wall, two visits - so like 3 hours - and the support call to get a mere ring in my pods AND to finally learn it’s a HEALTH team issue. Not real happy. And no am not doing that right now. I will manage with just the ring for now. Ugh
