This happens if you install any of Apple Music for Windows, Apple TV for Windows, or Apple Devices for Windows. iTunes becomes crippled and only able to manage podcasts and audiobooks. If you remove all three iTunes should be restored to its former glory. If you need to reinstall iTunes use this link:

turingtest2 - that would have been the right answer until a few weeks ago. But recently deliberately removed the ability of iTunes for Windows to connect to an iOS device. Instead they have published a new Windows app called Apple Devices (only available through the MSFT store). That app will connect to an Apple Device, but it is limited in functionality compared to the old iTunes of a month ago.

I've discussed this with Apple Support people twice, and they acknowledge the change. The problem I saw is that the "

send to device" feature is no longer available - so the only option for getting content onto the device is by synching - which has the downside of erasing other content. This is an ugly mess for someone like me who owns (legally) a lot of content I did not get through Apple, but sometimes wants to move a single piece of content to my phone or iPad.

And I tried testing the sync process of the Apple Devices app - and it did not work when tested on one of my older iPhones.

Again - this was a design decision - but did not account for the many ways that users use their devices.

I'm very tempted to switch to Android - although I really don't like the whole Android environment. Its like the product managers involved (who don't even bother responding in this community) are Android salespeople.
