Sequoia update removes everything from screen except wallpaper
Have restarted several times. Need to retrieve files, icons, thumbnails, etc. Cursor is working but nothing is available to click on.

I assume this was a macOS "upgrade"...
but you do not say from what previous macOS—this would be informative .
Both Sonoma and Sequoia have the Stage Manager feature. Try turning it off and compare your results:
