How do I enable text announcement in CarPlay after iOS 18 update

Since ios18 update, text messages do not announce in carplay unless the vehicle screen is the message screen. They will not pop up on any other screen. It will read them but but show the message. I don't want the audio announcement but I want to see the visual announcement when I'm on the radio screen

Message only showing notifications if CarPlay is running in front Of in background, no message notifications. After speaking to an Apple Support representative, I was told that the feature was removed in update 18 for safety reasons. I fail to understand how removing a notification from the screen on audio is a safety issue but leave it with CarPlay on screen and notifications show up. go to

I too have been trolling various forums/websites since I upgraded my iPhone 13 to iOS 18.1, and yes, to find a solution to this same change in CarPlay integration behavior. Prior to upgrading my iPhone 13 running iOS 17.7.1 to iOS 18.1, CarPlay worked just fine.

Immediately after I installed the new iOS 18.1 update, like a light switch it changed to this new behavior.

I too have tried everything including:

  • Enabling/disabling the RCS protocol (as this was mentioned as possible cause), no change
  • Went through all possible notification options/combinations (on both my iPhone 13 and within CarPlay), no change.

However, I do get an audible tone indicating a text message was received, but (if not on the CarPlay screen) no longer receive a popup message.

The most probable answer (which is mentioned on several sites), is this new behavior is by design.

The "why" is still unclear; possibly to force the user to use Siri message announcements, or to influence more CarPlay screen time in your vehicle. It's another example of how a behavioral change in software can influence an unconscious change in human behavior.

Just a thought.

After upgrade to iOS 18.1.1 on a new iPhone SE and a 2025 Buick, I get no longer get an audible notification of text messages through the car or any visual notice unless I’m on the CarPlay screen. I used to get a tone sound and a preview of the message on my car display regardless of with screen my display was sitting on. I could select the preview window and Siri would read me the text. Now I have nothing. My car will also not stay connected to the phone via Bluetooth either. I’ve unpaired them, restarted both phone and car and repaired them and nothing has fixed it.

Imho this is has nothing to do with safety, and more to do with the battle for active screen time and data collection.

One example of this is (and again imho), manufacturers like GM are looking to phase out CarPlay altogether in order to regain active screen time and perform their own data collection in their vehicles.

This is about a battle to interact with you, the driver, it won’t be long before our LED screens become a conduit for advertisement, and the source of the active screen is the winner.

Don’t hold your breath waiting for this feature to return, I doubt it ever will.

It's not always the iOS update's fault!  Many things can cause phone problems.  If you tell people you think it's an iOS update, it might make it harder to fix or find a solution for the real issue.

Remember, the right question often leads to the solution! Please look in the right direction.

iOS updates aim to enhance user experience, boost security, and fix bugs rather than disrupt core features. The majority of the issues after updates might stem from underlying, unmentioned factors. Updates won't typically alter personal data but may refine settings or features. Backup before major updates for safety. Review Apple's update details and backup advice for a smooth process.

Kindly consider checking your settings and addressing any device issues before attributing the issue to external factors. This could be a pure coincidence that the iOS update affected the iPhone functions.

Before initiating a standard iOS update, it's advisable to create a backup. Have you completed this step? If yes, proceed with the restoration from the backup.

I already checked all of my settings repeatedly and they are unchanged. I have changed them and changed them back. I've done everything. Also, there is no setting which allows it to read the message aloud but not give a visual announcement. I've seen other posts on this forum making the same complaints, albeit in other makes and models of vehicles. The consensus seems to be "wait for another update and they'll fix it like they do the other glitches when a new ios comes out .". I simply wanted to add another voice in hopes that someone might offer some meaningful solution other than the same old tired nonsense of "check your settings".
