"Some Results May Not Appear" Error in Mail after iOS 18 update

Ever since upgrading to iOS 18, I’m getting very limited search results (1 or 2 recent emails) - and the following error in the iPhone mail app:

“Some Results May Not Appear

Mail downloads and organizes messages when iPhone is locked, charging, and connected to Wi-Fi. Large accounts like this may take longer.”

My mail app archive is sizable but it’s been a couple weeks since upgrading - and the message still appears.

I’ve seen a few similar threads for earlier iOS versions but nothing for iOS 18 nor this specific wording.

I finally broke down and went through the excruciating troubleshooting with Apple support and we did manage to fix it.

What we did was:

  • Turn off iCloud mail on the local iOS Device (Settings > Your Name > iCloud > Mail)
  • Choose an alternative default mail client (Settings > Apps > Default Apps)
  • Delete the Mail App (Touch and hold on the Mail icon > Delete App)
  • Give the iPad about a minute to delete the existing data and the Mail App
  • Head to the App Store and download the Mail app again
  • Reset the Default Mail app to Mail (as above)
  • Restore any non iCloud accounts to Mail (it will turn on the iCloud Mail option automatically on reinstallation)

This worked on my iPad and I now have parity in searches with my iPhone at least. I’m hoping the rest of the indexing will happen overnight.

I think it's fairly obvious that there is a major bug. and I doubt that we need be concerned about Apple seeing these posts because (a) hundreds of people will have reported this direct and (b) if anyone tells you apple don't look at their own community forums i would question their reasoning!

Added to that, this is not a private Relay issue, or even an iOS 18 issue, it been going on for much longer than that. Even the posts on this thread go back to November and a search will show many more, much older.

It is frustrating that Apple don't respond/ communicate, but they never have on these forums.

I just hope that someone back there is close to fixing this bug because that's what it is. Your efforts are appreciated cited but you really are wasting your tie unless you are actually an Apple software engineer in disguise! (which you might very well be, and if you are, you are still wasting your time talking about Private Relay!)

Thanks. I am on 18.1.1 and don’t have that option. If I follow the path you wrote, I get: Settings/Apps/Mail/Privacy Protection/“protect mail activity”

Underneath that toggle, it says this is to hide the IP address.

I don’t have anything saying “block all remote content” in my settings. At this stage I am reticent to allow an update given that a number of people on 18.2 are saying it’s even worse! (And it doesn’t solve this issue).

If I do a search now in my emails I’m getting more results than I was 2-3 weeks ago, but still there are emails I know are there which aren’t showing up.

This is ridiculous, why am i constantly getting this error every time i search for an email. My phone is not locked, it’s not charging and even when not connected or connected to wifi i still cant get emails! Seriously, my phone was fine before this update. I travel international and i need to access my emails, and why isn’t Apple addressing this? I think not being able to access one’s emails calls for a response from technical support!!!

This issue has caused me to not have access to an email containing show tickets and is going to ruin my evening and cost me to waste 650$ CAD. This is so basic how can you screw this up Apple?!

I have always had iPhones for the last 10 years or so and always been an Apple fan. Mac’s, Apple TVs, iPads you name it. Every single update seems to get worse and less user friendly (that’s why people liked iPhones). I rely on being able to search my emails. I have searched low and high and no answer for this stupid message. Plugged in, with wifi and charging (also which is absolutely ridiculous feature). Very much ready to turn in Apple.

Some Results May Not Appear. Mail downloads and organises messages when iPhone is locked, charging and connected to Wi-Fi.

Yep, sure have. I do file my emails away into folders however I have so many and use to be able to just search for them as you said either using specific words, email addresses or names. Only very few emails if any appear now. So so disappointing. It feels like we are going back in time. My work computer is PC and I can search for almost anything, it’s so easy to find past emails. It really shouldn’t be this hard 😣

For several months now I’ve had the same frustrating message too. When I also clicked unread messages the iPhone shows none, yet the notification says I have 675 of them…which of course I can’t see! A few months ago I asked it show all the messages from “Expedia” which it showed and I deleted but now shows this very annoying message instead of any actual emails. No idea how to fix.
