"Some Results May Not Appear" Error in Mail after iOS 18 update

Ever since upgrading to iOS 18, I’m getting very limited search results (1 or 2 recent emails) - and the following error in the iPhone mail app:

“Some Results May Not Appear

Mail downloads and organizes messages when iPhone is locked, charging, and connected to Wi-Fi. Large accounts like this may take longer.”

My mail app archive is sizable but it’s been a couple weeks since upgrading - and the message still appears.

I’ve seen a few similar threads for earlier iOS versions but nothing for iOS 18 nor this specific wording.

I finally broke down and went through the excruciating troubleshooting with Apple support and we did manage to fix it.

What we did was:

  • Turn off iCloud mail on the local iOS Device (Settings > Your Name > iCloud > Mail)
  • Choose an alternative default mail client (Settings > Apps > Default Apps)
  • Delete the Mail App (Touch and hold on the Mail icon > Delete App)
  • Give the iPad about a minute to delete the existing data and the Mail App
  • Head to the App Store and download the Mail app again
  • Reset the Default Mail app to Mail (as above)
  • Restore any non iCloud accounts to Mail (it will turn on the iCloud Mail option automatically on reinstallation)

This worked on my iPad and I now have parity in searches with my iPhone at least. I’m hoping the rest of the indexing will happen overnight.

I lost all mail last week for one of of my email account. It was a Gmail account so I thought Gmail issue but now I wonder. Today I received an email from a seller I bought from about August this year. I wanted to compare prices. This email could not be located and I got the same “some results”. I thought Gmail again until I found this thread. What is going on?????

I entered this a few days ago then I remembered another post that I can’t find today. I had my issues when it told me some emails were not read. I couldn’t find the unread one so I highlighted all and noticed they were all unread even though I was told only one was unread. I don’t remember it I clicked read but after this all my emails disappeared. Google claimed I had a virus email and they could not retrieve the missing emails

My iPhone is on the current system and is locked, charging and connected to my home WiFi all night, every night, as I plug it in next to the bed.

But a search for emails always produces very limited results, to the extent that if I am out, or in a meeting, i will make excuses about 'not having filed my mails properly'. How embarrassing.

When will Apple fix this longstanding problem?

(Please don't tell me to 're-start my phone, upgrade the OS, or report this on the Apple support site' as I've done all this, many, many times over the last few years. It seems to me that giving that kind of advice is just a cheap way for some people to increase their Support Points score without having to use their brain...)

Just hoping to add to the clamor that eventually creates a fix. This started with 18 and I have since updated to 18.2, which gave me a lot of useless AI functions and random buttons that I don't need, but did not restore my ability to, you know, SEARCH MY EMAIL. I use Apple mail for work and it is really impacting my ability to do my job on the road. If it keeps up, it might be time to give up on Apple products altogether.

I am discussing this with Apple now. As of this morning, I have emails from yesterday that say the eye haven’t been downloaded to the server. Started discussing it and suddenly my emails were working and I was able to see emails from months ago that weren’t showing up before. As usual, the problem was my phone, the amount of memory I have, my network connection, my charger, everything but the change Apple made. Even though this has never been an issue in the past the message is “it takes time to swap over emails when you upgrade the operating system especially when there are a lot to download”. I told him the problem has occurred for months and he said he would look into it really quick. It sounded like Apple wasn’t aware of the problem at all so I asked if they really haven’t been monitoring these forums and he said that they are aware of the reports and it is being investigated. I don’t have high hopes and about to abandon ship with everyone else that’s leaving. This is beyond ridiculous. I’ll update y’all as soon as I can.

For me, as a long term user, manager of 4 companies and apple developer, this is the absolute final straw.

The continuous battle against autocorrect deciding what I really mean and being blocked from which character of text I actually want to edit, along with the ridiculous over complication of basic apps shows that Apple doesn’t respect my choices or needs and is only bent on supporting vain instagram selfie posters.

I wanted to upvote your comment, but now Apple is putting a limit on how many up votes I have! I've only clicked up vote on five or six items on this thread. I only get five or six votes an hour???. What are they talking about? this is beyond ridiculous. I have the same problem with everybody else and I'm not even allowed to upload things on the thread. Apple is gonna force me to make my own comment and then not answer -ridiculous

It's always disappointing to bump into a problem and find that users reported it months ago. I am piling on to hopefully escalate the issue. Referencing past emails is a daily use case. Apple is not storing my email on their server, so why are they limiting my downloads? I don't understand how this makes sense. I'll be switching to Outlook ASAP. "Can you go into my office and search my mail?" is not something I should ever need to ask a colleague.

Finding this thread gave me a second of hope… until I opened it to see all of us asking the same thing: APPLE! WHY?!

This day and age, our world RELIES on technology. Email is essential to perform daily tasks. Searching for previous email discussions is detrimental for many of our employers. This is just simply disgusting that Apple has not addressed this. Apple, DO BETTER! 🤦🏻‍♀️
