Markup issue/bug IOS 18.0 photo editor

I have a 14 plus, updated to IOS 18.0, and have noticed an issue with the Markup tool when editing photos…specifically when trying to change the color of text when adding text to a photo.

I added a video of what happens, essentially when I click on the existing text to change it to another color (as I’ve done so many times before) when the toolbar opens to change, it offers the choices, I click on the circle to change color, and the pallet selection then opens…before I can click on a choice, the whole thing closes on it’s own. When I try to reopen it, it opens and instantly closes by itself. It looks like a bug/conflict. Thanks.

This appears to be resolved with the release of 18.2 today (12/11/2024). Have tested multiple times and am able to adjust color on shapes, arrows, text, etc.

I was able to receive Apple support from their Photos team this morning. Kudos to the gentleman who observed my issue with markup in Photos and in Notes, and did his very best to document and locate their internal bug record. I’ll give Apple credit. Their support team and debugging tools are exceptional.

While this is not the final solution, I decided to accept his recommendation to Reset All Settings, as there were historical entries in this bug report highlighting it solved the problem. And it did!

My markup tools are displaying, working and no longer are apps freezing/crashing when I try to markup a photo or note.

Caution: If you reset your settings, you will need to recreate your Home Screen, re-add all of your cards into Wallet, and set any special notifications or sounds.

Same issues here. Had a 12 Pro, updated to iOS 18, immediately noticed that changing text color in markup wouldn’t work, almost as if the color screen was force closing. It fixed itself for a couple days, then the same issue came back. My husband has a 14 Pro, my son has a 14, and their markup works just fine. I just upgraded to a 16 Pro since I was eligible for an upgrade and my 12 Pro became so laggy. I have the same issues with markup with my 16 Pro as I did with my 12 Pro, so it’s not a phone issue. The issue seems very user specific, but I do think it’s an issue with iCloud. I can save a photo to my files, open up the photo within the files app, and markup works just fine. It does not work through the photo app.

I got on the phone tonight with a senior support guy for photos who helped me with adding shapes & borders and fills.

Towards the end of the call, every time I selected the shape, then tapped the color circle far left on the shape editing bar, the master editing bar (with the pens) at the bottom appeared, then quickly disappeared. Meanwhile I couldn’t change the color.

He saw it and was not happy. Suggested I restart my phone but did not agree on full reset. Said he’d forward the bug report.

LEAVE A ONE-STAR REVIEW FOR PHOTOS ON THE APPS APP.

As someone suggested, we should all send Apple feedback (I forgot where to do that), call Apple support, and post the problem on social media. Another thing to do is:

On your phone’s APPS app, leave a ONE-star review for the Apple Photos app. The review for the past few months are horrendous, but it will take a lot of review to help bring down the average Star rating and make Apple notice.

This has happened to me as well on my 14 Plus, so I’m glad I’m not the only one this is happening to. I’ve also had issues where I try to open the tool bar for both text and shapes to change the color, line width, etc. and it doesn’t open at all, or opens for a nano second and closes right away. Additionally, after I change the end shape of the arrow and hit done, it takes me fully out of markup and I have to go back in.

Yes, still an issue thru all the 18 updates.

Switch to the highlighter (wide drawing instrument) and then add text to a picture…when you try to change the color of the text, you still have the problem.

switch off the highlighter to another instrument and it works sort of…but the bug still persists, and the two bottom bars overlap.

It’s a bug…my wife works in an IT field and I could too if I wanted to.

Hello from Catalonia! I have an iPhone 15 updated to iOS 18.1.1 and I have also the same problem with changing colour in adding text in Photo App. I did it millions of times before with previous iOS versions and it worked perfectly.

Please Apple fix it as soon as possible!!! I need it to watermark for free my identification card. I’ve tried other Apps to watermark but they are very complicated and they are pay versions.

So this markup problem only “caught up” with me in the last couple of days. And just as I was getting more comfortable with using markup after the update over the summer that made it more difficult to use. I looked for, and loaded the latest update (18.2.1), which didn’t do a **** thing to help with markup. Apple’s slowness to correct this is really bad. Are they afraid of the meme content that users create?
