My 2015 MacBook Pro is running El Capitan. I quickly checked the procedure for getting it ready and it says only Monterey allows for erasure. That seems weird. Should I upgrade to Monterey just to erase it for sale?

No point in updating as your Mac is not Apple Silicon nor Apple T2 security chip.

Boot into Restore mode,CMD+r keys...
Look at top of screen for Utilities menu...
In Disk Utility>View, select Show all Devices, highlight the top left entry.
Run Disk First Aid on all items in the left panel, from top down.
Anything show there?
If not get an external drive to install to.
Thank you. I followed those steps, but had somehow changed the name of Macintosh HD back to the name of the hard drive device. That worried and confused me, but when I changed the name back, I was able to complete the OS install. All is well that ends well!
Strange rule, but I cannot delete this post. I am simply going to do the update. It just makes sense.
