Is it necessary to provide my lock screen PIN for iPhone repair?

I need to send my iPhone in for batterie repair, but the repair shop says they will deny the repair if I don’t provide my lock screen PIN or disable the lock screen entirely. I have sensitive data on my phone, so I’m hesitant to do this. Is this a common practice, and is it really necessary for them to access my phone like this?

I have seen that repair shops put phone in a special mode for repair so if they need to test something they can do it like that.

Kind regards

iPhone 15 Pro, iOS 17
