iPhone 16 and 15 Not Connecting to iTunes (or Windows?)...iPhone Xr connects Without Issues

Thanks in advance. I have tried several things suggested in this and other forums, but nothing has resolved the issue.

My wife got a new iPhone 16 and I am now using her previous device, an iPhone 15. My old device is an iPhone Xr.

I have been unable to connect either new device to my PC. iTunes does not recognize either device when plugged in. In fact, I don't even think Windows recognizes either device, as neither shows up in Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Device and Printers, or in Device Manager > Portable Devices when plugged in. Both give "Charging" status when plugged in and appear to be receiving battery recharge. Neither device gives the "Trust This Computer" notice.

I have tried:

  • multiple USB-C cords, including the ones that came with the devices
  • multiple input USB ports
  • uninstalling and then reinstalling iTunes
    • at one point I could not locate Apple Mobile Device Support on the PC, but I have since corrected that issue - it is present in Program Files > Common Files > Apple
    • AMDS does currently appear in the list of services (Run > services.msc)
  • However, AMDS does not appear in the Device Manager while either new phone is plugged in, but does appear when the old phone is plugged in. Therefore, any instructions regarding updating drivers from the Device Manager would not apply for the new devices
  • Restarting the AMDS per these instructions: Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service (AMDS) on Windows - Apple Support
  • Extracting the usbaapl files from the installer and copying them into the AMDS folder

Whenever I plug in my old iPhone Xr, iTunes immediately recognizes it and it operates without issue.

One thing I have not tried yet is yet another cord. As I said, I have tried multiple cords, including the one that came with the iPhone 16, but this user reports upgrading the cord fixed a similar issue: iphone 16 can't connect to Windows 10 - Apple Community. My PC does not have a USB-C input port.

Thanks again for your help.
