How problematic is a replacement battery that is not genuine Apple?

iPhone SE, iOS 17.6.1, and all this is new to me. I'm not dumb but I am ignorant

I just learned (on this forum) a week ago about iPhone battery health. I was told to look in Settings and it was below 80% so I needed to replace it.

I went to the Verizon store where I bought it and they said they don't do that, and I should find an Apple repair place. I googled for "apple authorized repair near me" and it said there's a fix-it place in the local Walmart so I read the customer reviews and they all said it's a great fix-it place so I went there and got a new battery for $90.

I went home and only then saw that the Settings button on the home screen has a red circle on it and inside it says the battery is not recognized, it's not a genuine Apple battery, and health information is not available for it. Sure enough, inside Settings/Battery I can't see any health info.

RATS!!! and DARN!!!

I don't think I'll be able to take it back to the fix-it guy. But other than not knowing the battery's health, which I never knew anyway in the five or six years from the time I bought it, is it a problem for the phone working? I suppose I'll find out tomorrow, after it charges up overnight, if it runs up to 100% (the level of charge at the top right corner seems to work). And I'll find out during the day how long the 100% lasts.

But I'm just wondering if y'all have an opinion on aftermarket batteries.

And if I really do need to get a genuine Apple battery, how do I find a genuine Apple repair shop?

It's too late for a genuine Apple battery, Apple won't touch it now that it has been tampered with by a third party shop.

Depending how good the battery is you may have other issues such as the battery not being strong enough to handle the current load the phone may need.

On the other hand, it may be just fine, it will just depend on the quality of the battery.

I did say thank you, and clicked Post, and saw it show up on the page. But now when I come back I don't see it. So please don't think that I didn't appreciate your link.

That has happened to me a couple of times now on this forum. It's rather disconcerting. I have no idea how it can happen. Does that kind of thing happen for others? I don't do an awful lot of forums but I just haven't seen it elsewhere.

In any case, again I thank you.

p.s. I just clicked Post and it showed up. I'll be interested to check back tomorrow

Hello~ I saw your “thank you” when you first posted it and it is still there. It always means so much when someone takes a moment to do so. In the right hand corner…right up under your original question… you will see ”Sort by:” you may want to tap and change the order in which you view the posts here. I have mine set to “oldest” and the posts appear in order. It can get confusing sometimes but know that your kindness found it’s mark and I appreciate it so much.
