Reminders app badges do not work ios18

Hello.

I've been using my iphone XI pro for 5 years and finally got myself an upgrade. Instead of doing a transfer/migration, I have manually (and painstakingly) setup my iphone one app/setting at a time.

I am finding the reminders app is not properly showing badges anymore. I have 2 tasks that were due yesterday and it cannot get the badges to show up. This is a critical way I manage my ongoing to do list. I managed to use this thread to figure out how to get REMINDERS to even appear in notifications, but still no badges.

can someone advise how to fix this? I used my XI-Pro like this for 5 years up to ios17 so something is wonky in 18
