My Phone Randomly Restarting and Battery Issues – Here's What Happened and How I’m Getting It Fixed

Recently, my phone started randomly restarting and wouldn’t stay powered on unless it was connected to a charger. I knew something was wrong with the battery, so I contacted Apple Support for help. Through chat, an advisor ran a diagnostic test and shared the following:

Apple Support Feedback:

"Upon checking the diagnostic report, I see that your battery has degraded to 59% with 1,280 charging cycles. Apple recommends replacing the battery when it drops below 80%, and in this case, your battery has exceeded its expected lifespan. Replacing it would restore full capacity."

This was really helpful, but I also learned something that I think everyone should be aware of:

  • If you have AppleCare+, it covers battery replacements for certain Apple products when the battery holds less than 80% of its original capacity. So, if your phone’s battery is struggling, this might be a good option for you.
  • However, if your insurance is through your carrier, like mine is, you should check if they offer unlimited battery replacements. For example, I have AT&T’s Protection Advantage Insurance and Protection Advantage Support Services as part of my phone plan, and it includes unlimited battery replacements. This was a game changer for me!
  • After chatting with Apple Support, I set an appointment with my local AT&T store to have a ProTech test my battery in person to confirm if it qualifies for a replacement under my insurance. According to Apple’s diagnostic, it should be eligible, but the ProTech needs to verify this as part of the process.

I’ll update everyone once I go through the appointment to let you know how it all turns out!

Pro Tip: If you’re experiencing similar issues and don’t know where to start, I recommend going straight to Apple Chat Support. Have them run a diagnostic test on your device. It’s quick and easy, and they’ll tell you exactly what’s wrong with your phone.

UPDATE: I went to my appointment, but they informed me that I would need to file a claim through Asurion instead, so setting an appointment with AT&T turned out to be unproductive. I had to go all the way back home and file the claim online because the automated system kept rejecting my phone number. You can file a claim at this website: Asurion Claims for AT&T.

After submitting the claim with all the details, you have two options: either have a technician come to you or take it to a local store. Given that this was the third day dealing with battery issues, I chose to visit a nearby Ubreakifix store to expedite the process. However, when I got there, they were short-staffed, and I was told that the phone wouldn’t be ready until 6 pm—which was frustrating since I dropped it off around 11 am.

Hopefully, I’ll get my phone back soon, and I’ll update you all with how it turns out!
