Apple TV won’t let me play Netflix on my tv, saying there’s an issue, and to make sure the monitor is HDCP compliant - whatever that means. The Apple Store technician had never heard of it and suggested I contact Apple Support. I see however this was mooted as a problem 4 years ago, with no solutions offered by Apple. Please explain!

Netflix no longer supports model A1469 or earlier (since August 1, 2024).
Netflix does not allow AirPlay (since early 2019) involving any Apple devices.
You are going to need model A1625 or later, if you choose to use an Apple TV box.

Video signals that invoke HDCP require that all equipment between decoder and screen supports HDCP. If you use non-HMDI cables or HDMI adapters, splitters, switches, extractors, soundbars, AV receivers, monitors, projectors, or other, then verify for HDCP compliancy on all of these. Commercial 4K video requires HDCP v2.2 or later.

if a Digital Rights Management encryption to protect copyright protected material from being copied and distributed
if your tv is old or if the hdmi cable is bad then it block hdcp protected material from being displayed.
if it was me then I would test with another cable and maybe test with another tv maybe that of a friend or relative, of cause a defect appletv box could also cause it
