Mac laptop, cd player plugged into it, not show up on screen

Do you have your Finder settings set to show CD/DVDs?

Also you won't see anything on the Desktop unless there's a disc in the optical drive.

There must be a valid disk in the player before it will show up on the Desktop or in the Finder.
