iPhone unlocks to some random app.

I've always thought this was a hardware or OS issue but I've just upgraded to an iPhone 16 from a 12 Mini and it's running iOS 18.0.1.

At random times, unlocking iPhone will open to some app that was not previously being used. I would think that any time you unlock the iPhone it would only ever open to the Home Screen. Are there times when this would not be the case? Why would my phone unlock to the Music app or Email app or Messages app when I have not used those apps for hours or days? All I'm doing is tapping the screen to wake it up and swiping up to unlock. There are no notifications on the screen.

It will always open to the last used app if you lock the screen with the app open. Is it possible that someone else knows the Passcode to your device. I would recommend changing the Passcode and see if the problem goes away.

This is not what's happening.

I'll lock the screen from the Home Screen and when I unlock it it opens to an app that was not recently in use. I'm not positive but I'm pretty sure every time I lock the phone I excitedly whatever app I'm using first. Regardless, when I posted this it was because I unlocked the phone to find it on an app I hadn't used in over 12 hours.

I'm the only one in the house.

This has been happening for many years. I was hoping it was a bug with my previous phone.

I could suggest things like a Force Restart or Factory Reset, but I honestly don't like throwing suggestions out there when I am not able to confirm those solutions would work. I cannot confirm that on my own device and the only similar experience I can find here was a user double tapping the Lock Screen to wake up the device and the second tap happened to be on a Notification that would open to that app when unlocked.
