Why does my iPhone 16 Pro Max Action Button require two presses?

I am currently using an iPhone 16 Pro Max on 18.0.1 and I am having issues with the action button. I always have to press it twice to get it to perform a function. I normally have it set to silent/vibrate and I noticed that I press it once and nothing happens, then a second time and it will then perform the action.

I tried setting it to the flashlight, camera, magnifier and voice memo and it does the same thing where I press once and nothing, then if I press a second time it will launch what is selected.

I was told if its intermittent issues to take it to Apple for a service repair but it's consistent that I have to press it twice.

Anyone else having this issue, was wondering if it is some how software related. I am still having the screen response issue where I have to tap several times before it will recognize it. Hoping 18.1 will fixes these issues.

Have you tried to do what is recommended by Apple, which is to press and hold the action button to engage whatever you have programmed it to do? Just tapping it once, doesn't engage it. It needs to be pressed and held until the option engages. This is likely why people are finding they need to tap it twice. It was not designed to work with one press. It's one press and hold. Give it a try and see if it works.

If this is different from how you used it previously, I'd guess too many people were accidentally engaging what it was programmed to perform by one press. Pressing and holding the button is more purposeful.

Read this link about using the Action Button on iPhone from Apple --> Use and customize the Action button on iPhone - Apple Support (IN)

Use the Action button

To perform the action assigned to the Action button, press and hold the Action button.

For many functions, the Action button can be used to turn a setting on or off. For example, if the selected action is Silent Mode, you can press and hold the Action button to put iPhone in Silent mode . If you press and hold the Action button again, it turns off Silent mode.

Yes I'm aware of how it works for the silent mode function because I had an iPhone 15 pro last year for work purposes. I should have clarified that I am holding it in for a second and you typically feel the haptic vibration when it puts it on silent or turns the ringer back on but I have to press and hold, nothing happens, release and press and hold again and then it will activate.

Exactly.

It's frustrating that I can trust the action button to behave as expected while I'm actively using my phone, but cannot trust it will work on first attempt when I haven't used the phone recently. Attempting to turn the ringer on by holding the action button with the phone still in my pocket—you know, to change the setting without removing the phone—always ends with me needing to take the phone out to try again and confirm the setting actually changed. Of course this defeats the purpose of what I was trying to do, and at that point the setting changes on second attempt because the phone is no longer idle.

I changed the Action Button settings to Flashlight. I locked the phone and it has set for more than 15 minutes. I turned the phone away from me as I did before so I could see the rear of the phone and without unlocking the phone pressed and held the Action button and the flashlight turned on. Without unlocking the phone I pressed and held and turned the flashlight off. End of test. It seems to have worked as expected for me.

If you scroll down you’ll see specific functions that can be enabled to operate or display when the screen is locked. The Action Button is not listed. So, either it always functions when locked, or it doesn’t.

On my Lock Screen, I have my flashlight and camera buttons in lower corners. Yet they don’t work on my Lock Screen. But Chris posted he can activate flashlight if his Action Button is set to flashlight and screen is locked. I tried flashlight on Action Button and it doesn’t work when screen is locked.

It just seems to me that something is not functioning properly. Why allow flashlight to work with one button and not another?
