iPhone apps can't communicate via WiFI since Oct 2024

Since the iOS 17.7 and 18.0 updates many of my apps can't communicate using WiFI. If I switch off WiFi they begin to communicate again. It's not my home WiFi gear - nothing has changed there. It is only since 17.7 an 18.0 became available I have been having problems. Then I upgraded to 17.7; that didn't help. Then I upgraded to 18.0 and it still doesn't work. I have a friend that has the same problem that has only recently cropped up - different apps from the ones I use. Apple - what did you do!? When are you going to fix it?

iPhone SE, iOS 18

Thanks Lawrence. This seems to allow my apps to work, but I have questions and concerns.

a. My friend's phone doesn't use VPN, why would hers have the same issue? My friend is now using iOS 17.7.

b. Why can't I use a VPN?

c. What happened to make this issue arise? It was working fine (dates are fuzzy) back in August, then I started having problems with some apps, then more apps, and then I noticed the iOS 17.7 update announcement (and buried in that I saw the iOS 18.0 update). I did the 17.7 update (forever hopeful that Apple would have fixed whatever got broken) but no joy, in fact I think things got worse. So, I tried the 18.0 update and still no better.
