New iPhone 17 - Some apps don't work on Wi-Fi "No Route to Host"

So picked up a brand new iPhone 17 yesterday, running iOS 26.1. Old iPhone was a 12 Pro running 18.7.1

I have yet not transferred my cell number to the new phone, so I could have a few days to get used to iOS 26 and make sure everything is running OK. I do have one big issue: many apps can't use wifi it seems. The error message is typically "No route to host" or similar.

Examples of apps not working

  • Facebook - Error message is Connect failed (immediately), type = Socket not open, errno = 65 (No route to host)
  • Instragram
  • Yahoo
  • X

Apps that work fine:

  • YouTube
  • Gmail
  • Reddit
  • Linkedin
  • Twitch

This is happening on multiple wifi networks. The old phone or an iPad running iOS 26 works fine for all apps.

TailScale and FortiClient are install, but not actively running.

Oddly, I did login to Tailscale and let it connect; the *poof* everything magically started working. I then disabled TailScale, but could not reproduce the errors

There is no reason at all to install a VPN on an iPhone unless your company or school requires it.

Despite what you see in all the fancy advertising, a VPN provides less.....not more.....security.

In addition, most VPN outfits will sell your personal information to anyone who asks. That's how they make money.

In other words......the VPN is not really the product.....YOU are the product.
