iPad mini 7 (A17 Pro) - magnet barely holds Pencil & won’t pair

I have a new iPad 7 (A17 Pro) today and the pencil barely attaches, it hangs at an angle and is not at all secure. Neither does the iPad recognise the pencil or allow me to pair it.

I have an iPad Pro already and I’m used to a strong magnet. I’m assuming that I’ve got a faulty iPad mini as I can’t think of anything I can do to try and fix the issue?!

The new iPad Mini 7th gen (A17Pro) does not support Apple Pencil 2nd generation, just Apple Pencil 3rd gen (USB-C) or Apple Pencil 4th gen (PRO), as per this support article:--> Apple Pencil compatibility - Apple Support
