Why are AirPods Pro 2 Hearing Aid features not available in the UK?

I just updated my iPhone to iOS 18.1 and cannot see the hearing aid/hearing test features. My AirPods are up to date 7B19

I'm in the UK if that makes any difference.

I've just noticed that the feature is not available in the UK. It's just about the only country where it's not available

I spoke to Apple support yesterday

I was told Apple doesn’t have the approval for UK yet that why it hasn’t be issued in UK.

As soon as they got the approval it will be released for UK too with the next update.

I hope this explains it 😊

gr7 ~ To reduce the dimensions of screenshots that you post:

1. Add the original sized screenshot to your post.

2. Tap the screenshot – handles should then appear at each corner:

3. Drag a corner to resize. (On an iPhone, it's better to do this in landscape orientation so you can see the new, smaller size.)

4. Post.

'You can call it "hearing aid" but that doesn't make it a hearing aid in the technical sense. Telling people they can get the hearing aid feature on versions of iOS prior to 18.1 is misleading.'

At no point did I call them a hearing aid. Please take the time to read and digest my posts before accusing me of posting misleading information.

IN IOS 18.1, if you attempt a hearing test that is in any way severe, a screen will appear telling you to book an appointment with an Audiologist and will go no further.

I'm UK based as well. I've seen nothing different in the accessibility> headphone accomodations since upgrading to 18.1.

I use the 'mimi' hearing test to update my hearing test results in the health app. My hearing is 31 dBHL left and 33dBHL right. Maybe your results are more severe and affect how iOS responds.

But the UK is not one of them. Why not? I am on the NHS waiting list to get my hearing tested... I am waiting already over 6 months. And the waiting list is ONE YEAR! But the NHS can't or won't approve this useful feature?

It could be something to do with these regulations: https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200607/cmselect/cmhealth/392/392we26.htm

Even if your country does get approval, if your hearing test shows worse than moderate hearing loss they Airpods won’t work.

If the feature is approved in your region, you will be able to do the hearing test. If your hearing falls outside of the range of "Mild to Moderate" hearing loss, you will not be able to use the hearing aid function. I have negligible hearing loss according to the test and I can't set up Hearing Aids.

If you already have the Airpod Pro 2s AND your iPhone is on an old IOS like 17.7.1 or older they will already work as hearing aids without any restrictions.

You're talking about Live Listen which is an entirely different feature. The Airpods are not functioning as hearing aids in the technical sense of the term:

Use Live Listen with AirPods or Beats - Apple Support

The AirPods have been available as hearing aids since 2022.

Again, that is incorrect.

Thank you for sharing the link. I have filled out a request for the feature to be reinstated while we await UK approval for the full-blown hearing aid feature. I feel this will take a while to approve.

In a couple, of cases, they had moderate to severe hearing problems but they found the Airpods really useful for watching TV and playing music. 18.1 has stopped their iPhones using an audiogram in the way it did before 18.1. Such a shame.

I can't see any difference with 18.1 My audiogram is uploaded and conversation boost is still there. Am I missing something?

Is amplification working for you? When audiogram is selected to tune my audio (custom transparency mode), then amplification has no effect, it’s not able to access the audiogram to produce the custom transparency mode effect anymore. I think it’s just applying a generic transparency mode setting, but not specific to your audiogram.
