AirPods Pro: Can't start hearing test "Place AirPods Pro in Case" popup

AirPods Pro gen 2 (lightning) Firmware 7B19


  1. AirPods in ears
  2. Settings -> AirPods Pro->Take A Hearing Test
  3. Popup appears saying "Place AirPods Pro in Case" (See screenshot for full wording)
  4. Putting them back in case for a prolonged period, including both phone and case on charger, does not allow the Hearing Test to proceed.
  5. I can use the Hearing Aid mode by loading an older manually entered Audiogram. But I wanted to try the hearing test to see if it has changed since the audiogram is 3 years old.


There is no mention anywhere online about this. The phone has been restarted multiple times.


What gives?

When I contacted Apple Support, I was advised to reset and re-pair my AirPods (Forget the AirPods from your phone and then hold the button on the back of the AirPods case until it flashes orange). After doing so, I was able to do the hearing test. I hope this helps.

I reset them AirPods Pro 2 (version 7B19) until the light flashed amber and then back to white. Did this many times. It still prompts me to put the AirPods back into the case and try again in a few minutes. I had forgotten the AirPods and on all my devices and tried the test via the iPad Pro and via the iPhone 16 Pro Max. It’s an endless loop.
