AirPods Pro: Can't start hearing test "Place AirPods Pro in Case" popup

iPhone 16 Pro

iOS 18.1 (final release after public betas)

AirPods Pro gen 2 (lightning) Firmware 7B19

AirPods in ears
Settings -> AirPods Pro->Take A Hearing Test
Popup appears saying "Place AirPods Pro in Case" (See screenshot for full wording)
Putting them back in case for a prolonged period, including both phone and case on charger, does not allow the Hearing Test to proceed.
I can use the Hearing Aid mode by loading an older manually entered Audiogram. But I wanted to try the hearing test to see if it has changed since the audiogram is 3 years old.

There is no mention anywhere online about this. The phone has been restarted multiple times.

What gives?

When I contacted Apple Support, I was advised to reset and re-pair my AirPods (Forget the AirPods from your phone and then hold the button on the back of the AirPods case until it flashes orange). After doing so, I was able to do the hearing test. I hope this helps.

I did as your post says to do. When I hold the button on the back of the case it never flashes orange.

How long do you have to hold it. The light flashes white when I hold the button and goes into paring mode.

I reset them AirPods Pro 2 (version 7B19) until the light flashed amber and then back to white. Did this many times. It still prompts me to put the AirPods back into the case and try again in a few minutes. I had forgotten the AirPods and on all my devices and tried the test via the iPad Pro and via the iPhone 16 Pro Max. It’s an endless loop.

I reset and repaired and still could not take hearing test. Maybe because I have Jabra hearing aids that have been added (although not connected when I do the suggested)? Air pods pro. Updated firmware, to 7B119, model A2698 (can't recall at moment), using 18.1 iOS

Yes, thank you. I held it for that time. It goes from white, then to amber, then back to white. I then paired it and it still wont let me proceed with the hearing test. I have the Gen 2 with the 7B19 firmware.

I’ve gone through this cycle several times. I can’t quite figure out why it won’t work. Thanks for your help though.

Hold the button for about 15 seconds and it eventually goes from white to amber.
