AirPods Pro: Can't start hearing test "Place AirPods Pro in Case" popup

I received this message as well (of course; why else would I be here?).

But the message said to wait a few minutes, so I let the case sit on the charger for about five minutes with the AirPods inside, and when I tried after that, it worked fine. So maybe the issue is that you really have to wait several full minutes.

I ran into this issue today. After not being offered the test because the battery's were too low. Once charged, I'd get the popup again and again...I put both iPhones and pods on charger and tried everything. endless loop.

Finally I made sure both iPhones and pods were fully charged, used "Forget Device" and re-paired the AirPods.

It Worked!!

The hearing test began and worked perfectly.

My problem with taking the hearing test was a bit different from the others who posted on the Communities. I was having trouble because the hearing test was not on my iPhone 16 Pro, which was really weird. All I could do was test the fit of the AirPods. I don't know if my "solution" will work for anyone else but all I did was put my AirPods Pro 2 back in their case, fully charge the case with the AirPods, and after 2 days, I tried again and discovered that the hearing test was now on my iPhone and I was able to take it. Very strange but it worked perfectly. It might not have taken the full 2 days for this to happen but that was how long I took before I tried to see if I could find and do the test.

When you go to a doctor for a hearing test, they put you in a soundproof room. That’s just how it works. When I took the hearing test, our home furnace started up and it halted the test. I had to turn off the heat in our home to make it quiet enough. That’s just how hearing tests work.

I just acquired an iPhone 16 Pro. IOS is 18.1, I have Air Pods Pro 2, firmware is 7B19. Hearing test is not available, what needs to be done to fix this problem?

I have tried all suggestions and I’m still getting the same message. Has anyone found a solution?

Somewhere in that process, the firmware updated too, but it definitely did not while the case was closed.

By "this" worked for me, I mean leaving open the case, with the AirPods in, near the phone, then going to the AirPods in Settings and lo and behold the hearing test was there.

It has to be set to transparency mode prior to starting the test

This was the solution! Easy fix thank you so very much!

Per the previous post/suggestion, pods must be on transparency to proceed.
