The Infamous Network Error Persists

It seems the issue haunting mac users from Sonoma, and now to Sequoia hasn't been fixed. This is what you get when you click on Ethernet in order to see or change static IP settings.

Any idea if/when this is ever going to be addressed?

Yup it’s just you. Restart in Safe Mode!

BTW is there any third party:

  • Antivirus apps
  • Cleaning apps
  • Maint apps
  • BPN apps
  • Security apps

installed???

It will help us get a good idea of what is causing your problem if you provide a report of your system, that way we do not have to play 20 questions with you. The report we are requesting does NOT provide any personal information and is extremely safe to use. Please navigate towww.Etrecheck.com and download the free version of EtreCheck. Once you have you downloaded the app and installed it, please run the report and save it. This report will help us get a good idea what has been installed on your system and help us be able to diagnose what may be wrong.

When you have your report, you can attach it when you reply to this message and we can then review it and help you determine what is needed to get your system running well again.

For instructions on how to download your EtreCheck report and attach it to your reply to this message please click How to use the Add Text Feature When Post… - Apple Community It is helpful to us if you download the report to your Desktop.

I did. It's still happening. Hence the word persists. And it's not just me.

It is not clear to me whether the problem manifests in Safe Mode, or not. Does it? Your determination is a fundamental troubleshooting step.

Configuration Files:
/etc/hosts - Count:

Something's not right with that. It may or may not be significant, but the Hosts file is used for resolving network addresses, and the screenshot you posted alleges something amiss with network connections. What that might be is a mystery.

Launch the Terminal app and post the output of

cat /etc/hosts

Unsigned Files:
Launchd: /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.printfleet.dcapulse.plist
Command: /Library/Application Support/ECI DCA/ecidca run --config /Library/Preferences/com.ecisolutions.dca.config --host-platform mac
Details: Gatekeeper bypass

That doesn't seem right to me either. Gatekeeper bypass? Do you have a need to do that?

I can only suggest reviewing Mr Etresoft's User Tip Fixing a hacked /etc/hosts file. What that company is suggesting strikes me as odd.

Will correcting that Hosts file fix your problems? I have no idea, but if you want to invite trouble hacking a Mac's Hosts file and / or deliberately bypassing Gatekeeper will certainly do it.

Try running EtreCheck in accordance with Old Toad's exquisitely illustrated instructions.

No, although I was running Parallels but stopped using it, and subsequently uninstalled it. I reinstalled Sequoia but it still exists. I uninstalled Parallels as per their instructions too. I believe it corrupted that function in the OS. I do not run any other security or other third party apps as you were concerned about. I've had other people tell me they're experiencing the same issue since Sonoma and it still exists even upgrading to Sequoia. I don't know what to tell you on that point. I was able to, through Terminal, change my static IP and DNS settings but trying to get to the network settings through the GUI gives me that error. I guess I'm stuck having to deal with it, or back up my important data and do a clean install. I'm just not in the mood atm.

Yes, the problem persists in Safe Mode.

The hosts file contains:

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.

# 127.0.0.1 localhost

# ::1 localhost

10.26.12.2 print.longbeachlibrary.org

This is because we're running a server in the building that contains the Print Center for people to store jobs and staff here can navigate to the server from a browser within the building. We were instructed by the Time Management company (Pharos) to edit our machines Hosts file to be able to get the the Nerve Center, which is a non-routable domain on the server.

I don't see how that would corrupt the OS' ability to access the Ethernet portions settings, when I can access the web just fine. Additionally, there are other mac users at other branches that utilize the same software, running on a mac, with their hosts file edited with similar information for their server, and no issues are being reported

Have considered editing the DNS settings to something like the Google settings. You may want to read:

I strongly suspect your issue is caused by some type of conflict or error in your third party software from Pharos. That is hunch, so if it's only this Mac that has the issue the simply change the DNS settings and test. If the issue goes away then you know it's the DNS setting you were using.
