Adding contacts from iPhone to daughters Apple Watch not working

I’m managing the contacts for my daughter’s watch using my phone. I open the watch app, go to her watch, select Contacts > edit watch contacts. I tap the + and select Choose from my contacts. I pick the contacts I want to add. There is no confirm button, just a cancel button, so I swipe down and it exits with nothing added. I’ve tried this any number of different ways and have yet to get the contacts to add to the watch.

how do I save the selections to add to the watch and have them actually add them to the watch?
