Notes from my iPhone disappeared post accepting new iCloud Terms and Condition.

I got a notification from settings saying to accept the new iCloud terms and conditions if i wanted to keep using iCloud on my phone (iPhone 12 pro max) I accepted and everything was normal but then I opened my notes app and all of my notes were GONE. I logged into my iCloud account and saw my most recents were there but I still don’t understand why all of my notes are completely deleted from my phone. They’re very important to me and I need them in my phone. Is there any way I can get them back? How could this happen?

I experienced this too on my iPhone 7 the day after I agreed to the updated iCloud terms and conditions (11/5/2024). No notes existed within the Notes app. However, I found that my Notes are tied to my iCloud account so I logged into icloud.com and found them there, yay! Next was to figure out how to get them on my phone. My iCloud account was listed under Settings > Notes > Accounts, but I was afraid to make any changes. So, I contacted Apple Support and we found a solution:

  1. Deleted the Notes app
    1. Since my notes data was tied to my iCloud account, it retained it. If your notes are local, it would delete them if you delete the Notes app.
  2. Redownloaded the Notes app from the Apple Store
  3. Opened the Notes app. No notes were there.
  4. Once the Notes app was opened, it prompted me to connect my iCloud account with a pop up that took me to Settings > Notes > Accounts > my iCloud account > iCloud. From there, we toggle the button next to Notes so it was On (aka Green) - screenshot below with the backup option for Notes toggled On
  5. I may have had to close the Notes app again but I forget. Either way, once we toggled the iCloud backup icon to On for Notes, this allowed for the notes to start downloading to my phone again!

I hope this may help someone too! So sorry folks are going through this.

I accepted the terms and conditions for iCloud when they popped up on my screen and today (nov 6)I realized that my notes were deleted. Slowly they started trickling in but stopped, I am missing notes from this year and even some from years before. I contacted apple support and they all said that the things suggested here I should not do since my notes are not backed up by iCloud. I understand that that is my fault for not having enough iCloud storage but at the same time most apple support specialist are acting like it's my fault. I did anticipate that my notes would be deleted due to apples mess up. I am supposed to have a call back but they keep saying that I will probably not get those notes back. I am beyond frustrated.

Hi, did you get a prompt with delete from my iphone or cancel, saying are you sure you want to continue? All icloud notes will be removed from your iphone? I’m too scared to press delete incase it deletes my missing notes which I can still see when I sign into icloud.com. I am freaking out, I have over 12 years of notes & important info in there I cannot lose & I cbf screenshotting thousands of pages… adhd things I guess.

Makes me realise I have way too much faith in this device & apple to not delete important stuff.

I dont know what to do 😱

Hello, so I also accepted the terms and conditions last night. Notes were gone this morning. Have tried everything from the past 5 pages of comments here to no avail for the past three hours. The 'on my iphone' notes are gone and not coming back with anything mentioned here so far. If I was to do a backup of my iphone to a previous backup would they potentially be in there?

In order to do that I need to update my laptop to the latest OS update however my faith in updates is currently weakened after what's happened this morning.

Has anybody got any advice as for this situation in particular? Tried shutting the phone off , toggling on and off the 'sync this iphone' etc etc. There is no 'recently deleted' folder anywhere to be found.

I thought I was backed up but as always, these are the moments I've found out it's not as straightforward as I'd presumed and I feel stupid now. Just to clarify I'm not having an issue with icloud notes or notes linked to an email account, but purely the 'on my iphone' notes. If anyone has had any luck I'd be delighted to hear how you got on. Thanks a million

I have the same issue, except one thing, my files were saved on my phone not iCloud. Especially since I ran out of 5Gb iCloud space. Everything was saved on the phone. So why did this agreement erase my notes? They didn’t even give a warning first. The solution I see here is probably dangerous for me because if I toggle iCloud off I get the warning that all my notes will be deleted from phone. So I need a different solution. Anything tips will help. But Apple drop the ball and will be hearing from me. All important notes were deleted. Medical notes, business plans, etc.

The same happened to me. I tried the following but ran into trouble, anyone run into similar and figured it out?

1 turned phone on and off

2 Can't toggle the apps using iCloud to "Sync this phone" as its the only option (no iCloud option)

3 could not delete the notes app and reinstall because it says "it will delete everything" and I don't want to take a chance.

Help! I have almost 350 notes and I put way too much faith in the iCloud system.

Okay, has anyone had this happen where a new note folder you created to house notes has not come back? I have uninstalled and reinstalled, did everything suggested here, but cannot find the note at all. It is SO IMPORTANT, but I cannot find it on the cloud, or in the notes anywhere. It is gone. I just need anyone to help guide me through this because I’m gutted.

The notification came up for me on the 6th of November. The notes suddenly came back after two times disappearing and I knew it had to have been the reason why this happened (along with storage capacity, low power mode and not having the updated iOS’ which I now do so I had to delete data) so I am glad I came across this thread via an internet search. Older notes kept on my previous device pulled up but unfortunately two of my most used notes didn’t sync to the latest version. I used these just before I agreed to the notification. A lot of information is gone. I tried a few things, even called Apple the day it happened and went into the store yesterday. A guy at the store said give it about a week and it could come back to the latest version as it may be stuck in the cloud finding it’s way back to me. I have edited the two notes since but stopped. I hope it doesn’t interfere with the chance of coming back to the latest versions I had. One was dated March 2023 and the other August 2024. Bizzare how this occured when they were regularly saved. He said this occurs to people. But two attendants there didn’t even hear about the notification issue yet and am sure they will in time. Very upsetting and disappointing. I’m not going to hold my breath on it coming back but I can only rebuild on the information I have. I am scared to try deleting the app and tried everything else that I came across. If anyone could please assist that would be greatly appreciated.

Tried all suggestions to retrieve notes. I am not sure how to get into icloud back ups on iphone 14 pro. However turned on my older ipad 6 th generation missing notes are there. However on my iphone icloud account notes are the missing notes. On default list it only lists on my phone and my gmail account to choose from. I cant seem to be able to get icloud onto my notes. Despite being listed as 1 of 4 accounts eg yahoo mail etc. Would having my phone on battery saving have affected accepting new icloud terms?
