I’m receiving messages RCS but then my reply is SMS

I was having the same issue. What I found worked was:

go into your settings and toggle OFF rcs messaging. Then turn your phone off. After it’s powered back on, go into the settings again and toggle rcs back on. It seems to have fixed it for me. For now anyways.

Did you try this? (don't worry it won't wipe your phone.)

To reset your iPhone or iPad's network settings, you can do the following: 

1. Open Settings
2. Select General
3. Select Transfer or Reset iPhone or Reset
4. Select Reset Network Settings
5. Enter your passcode if prompted
6. Select Reset Network Settings again

I did the update. Deleted the conversation again with my contact and had her reboot her phone. Seems to have stabilized for now. Not sure if it will continue. But has lasted for a couple days now.

I was having this same problem too, but restarting my phone seemed to temporarily fix it for me. I've also had to restart my network settings due to another, semi-related issue. I don't know yet if that is a long term solution, but it could be something else to try.

This also happened to me after I pushed a photo through as SMS. All outgoing messages after would only send as SMS. Tried all the recommended fixes. The only one that worked was deleting the phone number from the contact info, save, and then add the number back. All is working perfect now :)

"Send as text message" has nothing to do with sending messages to Android users. That feature tells the phone to automatically resend an iMessage as an SMS/RCS in the event the iMessage fails.

No they don’t. But here is the stupidest thing about all of this. When I go to group conversations with my contact that iPhone won’t send RCS to, it will send RCS in the group chat but still not in the individual conversation!! I’m totally dumbfounded by all of this. I deleted my contact again and re-added her. Back to RCS for now until my iPhone decides it can’t sent and just freezes in SMS mode. Starting to feel like Apple did this on purpose so they can drop RCS. If the banners weren’t so obnoxious I’d probably not care so much and move on with my life. Haha.

Did you reset networks?

Perhaps instead of trying to upgrade your mac around this issue

hold fast, or try to update the original configuration first.. To go

past the first range of problems takes you into uncharted lands.

IF you had more than one identical Mac, then one could be used

as a Test. Instead of running the mess out of control w/o reverse.

Review original or near similar Update Support articles; try again.

Have you restarted your Mac in Safe mode?

I’m having the same issue. It’s only with one contact. When she messages me it’s sent as RCS but when I go to message her it sends as SMS. It didn’t used to do that. I’ve had no problems until this morning. I tried restarting it and everything. Did you ever find a solution?

I'm on a Pixel 9 and seeing this with all of my Verizon/iOS friends. My messages all go over RCS and they get them fine, but their responses all come over SMS. This is a new development in the last week, all was over RCS prior to that.

Same thing with me. Only one contact, which is the person I text with the most. This morning my messages were sending RCS then later on in the afternoon, all my messages were sent SMS and his replies back to me were in RCS. I turned off my phone, switched WiFi connections, toggled the RCS switch. Nothing. I actually saw a one point the message box blink between SMS to RCS back to SMS. I know it’s my phone/network issue. It’s annoying that all this started this week.

Same here. I’ve experienced this on my iPhone 16 Pro, 15 Pro Max and 15. I haven’t been able to find a fix yet. Definitely seems to be a problem on Apple’s end. This seems to be ann issue with only certain people in my contacts list. Often times the message will fail to send all together until I manually send it as an SMS message. Hope Apple fixes this soon!

Having the same problem. iOS 18.2, iPhone 14 Pro Max. One contact who is using Google Messages on a Galaxy S22 or newer. My replies are always SMS, the incoming texts are always RCS. Text bubbles and read receipts are seen from their end.
