How do I fix 'Unable to send message - Message Blocking is active' when switching between RCS and SMS on iPhone?

My iPhone randomly cycles between RCS messaging and SMS messaging when texting Androids. My RCS messages work, but I can’t send SMS messages. When I try I get this automated response: “Free Msg: Unable to send message - Message Blocking is active”. When the Android user sends me a text message, it causes my phone to shift back to RCS briefly. A few seconds/minutes later my phone cycles back to SMS messaging, and I begin receiving the automated response again. I’ve never had any issues with sending SMS messages before. What can I do about this?

I also tried toggling the “resend as text message” setting. There is no option to turn off SMS messages. Nothing I do on my end seems to fix it.

"Resend as text message" only applies to iMessages. It determines the behavior of Messages if an iMessage fails to send. It has nothing to do with RCS/SMS.

You can't turn of SMS from your phone. Only your carrier can do that.

I think the issue must be on my end because it’s inconsistent and happens randomly with multiple people. Sometimes it’ll happen suddenly in the middle of a text conversation with someone. Sometimes my texts will be working normally with one person, but I’ll have this issue with someone else I’m trying to text at the same time.

SMS messaging is a carrier feature. The next thing you should do is contact them. Note that they will try to insist the problem is Apple's. You will need to be persistent.

That message is generally the result of something on the recipient's end. What happens if you turn of RCS Messaging?

The same thing still happens if I turn off RCS messaging. I tried toggling both RCS and MMS messaging in my settings. I also tried toggling the “resend as text message” setting. There is no option to turn off SMS messages. Nothing I do on my end seems to fix it.

I also learned recently that if I’m in a group text that involves an android, I can’t receive any of the texts from the group. I don’t even get any error messages, I have no way of knowing I’m being contacted. It seems like people in the group text may be receiving the “messaging blocking” error from my end though.
