Being a keen photographer, I only want to keep good photos and not use up storage on rubbish photos, but in Library there they all are.

When you want to delete photos from the library and not just remove them from an album, use the key combination ⌘⌫, not just the delete key ⌫. Otherwise they will remain in the library and just be removed from the album.

Did you just remove them from the album?
Have you tried deleting from the library?
Do you have a Raw/JPEG thing going on?
How did you go about deleting them? Where does it fail. Remember we can't see your machine so we need to give us the information to help you.
