Can a car be tracked with an air tag?

It's possible, but unlikely.

There would have to be other iPhones in very close proximity to the car to be able to pick up the signal that is sent out from the AirTag.

So, if the car was parked and there were other people with iPhones in close proximity.......(within 20-25 feet or so)......the location of the AirTag could likely be picked up.

The chances that a car traveling down the freeway with an AirTag could be located are probably about zero. An AirTag in a car creeping along in heavy traffic would have a better chance of sending out a signal that could be picked up by other iPhones in very close proximity.
